Re: Strip Stich @ glue Northwind
The Lady bug is gone so it is time to start finishing up the Northwind.
I tried a seat but it was to low ,so I built another base , front of the seat is at 11 inches ,that gives me a pretty good size box under the front for sponges and etc.
Also built a place in back of seat for drinks and etc
I have been ask a couple times just how I mount my seats so I am going to go through the processed
I cut two strips , these are 5/8 eide by 2 inches tall ,space them
and drill holes on 6 inch centers, then glass to the floor and bulkheads
I normally use a 2+4 standing on edge ,cut my groove with a table saw and cut the nothes for adding the seat support. You can see the shape in this pic
This seat is pretty tall but you just have to find the height you need and adapt it for your boat
I use two pins and a bunji to hold them in place
I like this set up ,it braces the floor I am able to remove the seat or secure it with a lot of adjustment for different loads.
Ron
Got to go paddle it tomorrow so I can see if I am to high.

Hey your boat looks great!
I just realized the Northwind is a derivative of the Sea Wind.
I'm in Austin and have a Sea Wind, if you guys would like to meet up sometime and compare boats side to side that would be fun. Could fish and tell lies too.
Cheers,
John

Ron dosn't tell lies, its just that his arm exagerates a little.

Johne
I had the pleasure of paddling one Sea wind but would love to do it again, after Darrel finishes his boat we will get together.
Now about the rascals talking about my arm being short or lon they are just kidding ,they know I am just a bashful quite ole Texan that never exaggerated on fishing

Re: Strip Stich @ glue Northwind
The 11 inch high seat worked great ,still plenty stable and super comfortable.
The only problem I had was when my grand daughter and I were paddling tandem ,we both were paddling in time and when we both got a good bite with the paddle on the same side it made the boat a little squirely
If paddled tandem I would drop the seat 2 inches, oh with 2 paddlers she will flyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Re: Strip Stich @ glue Northwind
I have enough miles on the NW to know I want to finish this boat out right.
Glued my stems on today
I do mine a little different than most folks do , I finish out the bow and stern justlike I am not going to apply stems then come back instal my stems and put cloth over them. that way the boat is still sealed even if I wear through a stem.
Patched a few scratches from not letting the epoxy age before using it.

Re: Strip Stich @ glue Northwind
got the stems covered in glass and the first two coats of epoxy and graphite put on
one more coat and then a final sanding to the rest of the hull and start work on finishing it while the bottom coat gets hard.

Thanks Tex
Re: Strip Stich @ glue Northwind
You have so many builds going it is hard to keep up. I thought you had finished that one. She is looking spiffy.
I see you are still in the tube. How is the shop coming? Or as seems to happen so often did it end up filled with other things?

Re: Strip Stich @ glue Northwind
I dont have any other builds going right now.
I decided to paddle this boat and get a feel for it ,balance
weight distribution where I wanted my rod holders etc. I have a lot of that done so now I am going back finishing her up.
This boat is going to see a lot of miles and camping trips, sure do like her.

Re: Strip Stich @ glue Northwind
I am doing this a little different than most boat reviews. I decided I was going to put some miles on the North Wind and paddle in as many different environments as possible before I wrote this up,so here we go.
This boat is 17 ft 2 inches long bye 28 ½ wide finished weight was 54 lbs ,not a little boat by any stretch of the imagination
When I built the deck I set it up for a 58 qt cooler ad the capability to carry 8 rods all that worked out well
And the places for the rod holders are also used when I just pull up and want to bank fish or troll.
She has been slimed
Been paddled tandem
Loaded heavy
Stability is awesome ,my seat is 11 1;2 inches high and I never feel tippy.
Paddling speed is awesome ,if your paddling beside most yaks you have to back off a lot because just paddling at a normal cadence you will walk off and leave them.
Comfort and weight carry capabilities are great ,as you add weight she just doesn’t notice it at all and the 7 ft cockpit is easy in and out, two 5 ft enclosed decks carry a lot of gear. A note here she does like to be loaded tail heavy.
This last weekend we paddled 14 miles loaded 7 up and 7 downriver, shallows ,deep holes , going through blow downs with a lot of current .she just handles it all in stride , the hull is slick enough to paddle upriver better than any boat I own.
I have to rate this boat head and shoulders above any boat I have ever paddled . I guess that says it all.

Looks like it turned out great Ron!
Does that mean you are done building boats, you are so satisfied with it?

Rod
I like to build them but I will have to say it is hard for me to get excited about it when the North Wind is sitting right there ready to go.
I want a Tandem so I will build it one of these days.

Re: Strip Stich @ glue Northwind
Played in the Northwind today.
The wind was blowing 25 to 35 miles an hour and since I have never played in rough water in this boat I decided to go play
I paddled 3 miles and did some surfing ,this boat doesnt even know it is in water most folks woundnt even paddle in. I stayed dry and had a blast. Going into the waves she road smooth no hull slap just knifed though them
This boat just continues to amaze me.
