1/13/11 The new kayak HYBRID on the Brazos, Slimed

Post by RealBigReel »

Took my newly semi-complete kayak HYBRID fishing on the Brazos.
Put forth around 11:00 after the thaw. Paddled about a mile.
Tried the Long rod first and I had Sandies hitting a 7" long Bomber 16J. With the modest tailwind I was getting casts near 100 yards.
Switch to what worked last week, Bass Pro Kastmaster knockoff. On the 3rd cast:

Shortly thereafter one slightly better.

It was pretty good. Some times I would get a couple or 3 fish in a row but it wasn't really much work. Lots of hits and lots of fish. I had 14 fish by 1:30
I tried balloon drifting a dead Shad. This was the most excruciating drift. Went straight where I wanted it, just took about 2 hours to get there. In the mean time I just kept chunking Sandies in the cooler.
After 20 though it slowed down and I had to actually work at it a bit. Around 3:00 with the drift finally reaching its destination and no action I caught Sandie # 25. I was just a little bit cold and had had enough fun for the first fishing trip out in HYBRID.

Came home cleaned fish and called my friends to come get theirs.

Great report and catches to match!!!
What was the temperature outside more a less when you were hooking up?
I would like to hit the Brazos river here around my area of Rosenburg and would hope to have at least a third of the good fortune you just did...

I live in Stephenville myself, where do you put in on the Brazos? I'm not expecting your hole locations or anything, just looking for a place to park and shove off. Thanks

Nice catch and report. Looking forward to seeing the boat. I have been looking at the blue foam pad to use in my one man canoe. How do you like it?

I planned my arrival and putting forth for after the temperature got above freezing. I was just a little bit late.
The high was supposed to be 44°. Don't think it made it. It was never warm and the water temperature was 46°.

The stuff I am using is just the closed cell foam sleeping pad from WalMart. I bonded it with contact cement 4 players thick for the seat. It is actually a little stiff but with some shaping it can make a decent seat pad, and it is cheap.
