Colorado River Camp 4-24-25

Post by DNR »

After a few changes of what section to do, we finally decided on launching at FM973 bridge and took out at Big Webberville Park. It was about a 17-18 mile trip. We camped on Cook's Island, a good decision, the camp spot I like at Cook's is in thick trees and there wasn't a cloud in the sky the whole trip. That shade was nice after all day in the sun.

It ended up being me, Hirschhunter and my buddy Kevin.

I was planning on the river running 5000 cfs like it had for the whole week before, but Thrus. it started back to the up and down yo-yo.

With bluebird skys and falling water the fishing was tough to say the least, but everbody caught some fish and Kevin caught some nice ones.

Hirschhunter got a chance to try out his new Old Town Pack canoe.
12' at 33#. It is amazing how light that thing is. Very cool boat.

Pretty early in the trip Kevin started catching some white bass, I saw his pole bent over pretty good and went over to see what he had.

That was a nice fish, around 18". Caught it on a good sized jig.

The fish might not have been biting but it was a beautiful day, and after that long winter I was not going to complain about blue skies and green trees.

Well no big drum, or feisty catfish or big beautiful Guad hybrids or 30+" gar or ....
My bigest fish of the weekend- 14"

Paul got a nice Guad X, and Kevin was happy with 6-7 fish.

The bovines were enjoying the day-

We made our way down 13 miles down to the island. This is a popular place to camp but this year so far not many people have been out. No one has been in this camp in a long time.

Both Paul and Kevin were sporting new tents, I've finally gotten used to my little tent.

I know there's those of us that like to see the food pictures, we did it up pretty good -

Mine, I had to break out two plates -

I hit the sack and didn't wake 'till the birds were out chirping, 8am. We didn't have that far to go to the take out so sleeping in a little was ok.

We hit the river after breakfast. Fish still weren't biting so I just enjoied the flow for the 5 miles down.

It was a nice relaxing trip. I catch so many fish out here that I can't complain about the fishing. I'm just glad it is finally Spring.

Had a great time Paul as always.

Looked like fun. Too bad the fish weren't more cooperative. Nice looking camp area and I know how yall like to eat so I would expect nothing less.

After the maiden voyage of the PACK canoe I love it! Now that is has a scum ring I will post a seperate report.

We had a great day floating, a lot of fishing and even a little catching. :)

As Dave says by the time we pulled in for camp around 6:00 we were ready for some shade. Tents and beds set up we started the fire while enjoying an appetizer of a shrimp cocktail ring. It was a perfect prelude to the steak/pork chops, baked potatoes, German potato salad and Bush's grilling beans to follow.

I think we were the first to camp on the island this year from the looks of the vegetation and lack of any fresh fire pits. We sat up by the fire and quietly discussed the day and other trips, past and future after dinner. The next morning we slept late and then had Dave's famous Southwestern breakfast burritos spiced with Cholula sauce. :D

Breaking camp at a relaxed pace we got of on the water and fished our way down to Big Webberville Park pulling out about noon. The end of another fine trip with DNR! :D

Good pics Hirsch. Where was the shrimp ring on the last campout. Probably in the missing cooler.

Always looking for the edge to one up our previous standard. You just have to be there to see who will be next with what to set a new standard!

Thanks for the great report, and for the review of the Pack. I also spent the weekend on the Colorado, further downstream. I'll try to get a report up in the next day or two.
