Prayers for Allen "Ol' Al" Crise.

Post by spiny norman »

Saw this over on Texas Fishing Forum. I know many of us Texas Fly Flingers have met or learned from "Ol' Al" at one time or another.
A good friend of mine, a guy many of you know, and a true pillar of the Texas fly fishing community, Mr. Allen Crise, is in pretty bad shape.

I've known for almost a month now that Al had cancer. But I've been waiting to find out how bad. Today, Al shared with me and some others that he is stage 4...inoperable. The cancer is in his esophogus (which we knew), liver, stomach, lungs, etc. and there's no way for them to remove it without killing him. They're going to try and "knock it back" with radiation and chemotherapy. But...as Al said...the news is "not good."

Al Crise is the Vice President of Education of the Southern Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers, a Master Certified Casting Instructor, and owner of the Hawk Ridge Fly Casting School in Glen Rose, Texas. If you live in the northern half of Texas and learned to fly cast within 100 miles of home, then within no more than 3 degrees of separation, you probably learned to fly cast from Allen Crise. He has been a tireless and selfless fly fishing educator in the Midsouth and Southwest...in fact all over the US...for decades.

I had my first (and only) fly casting lesson from him at the AP Kayak Expo a couple years ago, and a nicer guy (and better teacher) you will not find. Thoughts and prayers...

Only lesson I've ever had was with him on that same day and could not agree with you more. What a sad, sad situation.

All I can say is Al is truly a class act, a great casting instructor, and always placed special emphasis in trying to help the younger folks at the casting instruction sessions at our fly club. Al, you have the prayers of myself and many of the Central Texas Fly Rodders of Waco.

From another site,

he has a feeding tube now, and should start to gain some weight. he is at 135 pounds right now, which is very thin!! he starts chemo Monday in weatherford, and will have a tough 2 weeks ahead. he sounds great, and very upbeat. he said doctors are optimistic, that they can knock this down. let's hope so, and still keep Al in your prayers. he won't be taking any visitors till he gets his strength back

Howdy Friends
up date on Barry's Dad.
I am again able to EAT… Yesterday I had my First meal of real food, (Spaghetti Followed by a Fish Fillet.) Since June 14 th. I have been on a feeding tube to keep me going. Many of you that knew me know how much I liked to eat. Not that I was overweight at 185 pounds losing down to 128 pounds sure made me look like a “stick man”.

Yes Prayers Work, I can not “Thank You” enough.

Hey Guys
Just a quick up date on Al.
He stopped by my house a few days ago. He looks and sounds much better than the last time I saw him. He said that since he's able to take solid food again he's feeling much better/stronger.
So.............keep the good thoughts/prayers coming, they seem to be working!

Barry, you the person that used to sell the fly leaders. Bought quite a few from you, sure i am still using some.

Only know Al from the Texas fly fish event in Athens and have been one of his helpers many times over the years there with the Piney Woods fly club.

He is indeed a great teacher, person. Just wanted to post and let him know that were all glad he is doing better.
