Cleaning Yak???

Post by robrd »

Do you clean your kayak after every trip? Any special cleaners or products? I have a OK Prowler 13 and will be using it mainly in saltwater for now, but I will be using it in freshwater in the future. Thanks for your help.

I spray with 409 or simple green, then hose off and scrub with gentle car wash brush.

I take it to the power wash, the one you put in four quarters and spray your self.

Just hose it off, and hit the slime with a brush and a little soap. More so, I make sure I hit all the metal parts, screws, slides, cables, etc with heavy duty silicone from CRC. The guy who did the initial rigging did not use all SS parts as I requested.

I always clean my yak, inside and out, after every trip. Most times I use use a hose on the gentle nozzle setting and use a plastic brush and simple green to get the hard spots off. I put about a cap full of simple green in the hull and slosh it around and drain ( keep the hull smelling decent).

About every 7th trip, I use an electric pressure hose (1700 psi ) to take the hard to remove and mildew spots off.

I put 303 on my hatches about every 3rd trip and put it on the whole yak about 4 times a year.

I use fresh water to wash the rudder parts.

This practice has served me well for two years as I have no rust or failing parts, yet.

What is 303? I live in Cedar Park. Does anyone know where I could buy some? I've heard good reports about it, but don't know what it is.

Thanks

I sell 303 at my store. I work at Boater's World. It comes in two sizes 16 fl oz. and 32 fl oz. I just hit the car wash and it lets me spray down my truck at the same time.

I just scub my Prowler 13 with simply green, rinse off and then dry it and wipe it down with 303. Used the same routine for my starter Yak (Pelican Pursuit 100) that I have been using for about 3 1/2 years. Except for a little rock rash (scratches) on the bottom of the hull, it still looks brand new!

If I have the time, I try to always stop off at a carwash and just spray them down, but if nothing else at least at home- helps keep them nice as well as the paddles and seats, always a good idea though! :)

they also have a marine 303 or something i think.

The 303 Aerospace Protectant works good on the interior of your vehicle as well. It doesnt leave a shine like Armor All but a matte look.

I will stop at the car wash if I have some change on me but I usually just hose it off at home and let it dry.

on the hatches is there something better then 303 to help keep the rubber good?

Also on the kayak i just got the rudder wires are a little rusty. Not really but just a little. I was going to spray some Silicone Lubricant on them.
I figured the silicone lubricant spray would be better then WD 40.

Thoughts?

the problem with wd-40 is that it removes any protective coating that is left on the wires. It also attracts grit and grime. Silicone will dry and leave a protective finish that dirt doesn't stick to as bad. Not sure on what would be better than 303. I use 303 on my yaks, cars, 4-wheeler (makes removing mud easier), etc and so far I have no complaints (other than its a little pricy). A 32 oz bottle will go a LONG way though (I bought one for abou $30). Ive done both yaks twice, my bed cover 3 times, my 4-wheeler twice, my waterbed matress once, and still have 1/2 a bottle left!!

Im gonna spend an hour or so today cleaning out the used redfish i just got. Its in pretty decent shape but could really use some 303 on the hatches and seals.

Don't forget to check any bolts you have holding hatch covers after you clean the kayak.

The self service car washes are good. One time I decided to run through one of the automatic power washes that gas stations have with my Tarpon on top of my CR-V. All went well until the spray booms went across the back to the car - and they started pushing the kayak sideways on the saddles! I quickly put the car in drive and moved forward. The kayak sprung back into place. I had to go forward and backward several times ...and it still wasn't as clean as the self service places.

i didnt have enought 303 to get the whole kayak done so i just did the hatches and anything rubber i could find or plastic fittings.

I sprayed all the bolts, rudder cable, rudder and anything metal i could find on the yak with some silicone spray and just wiped off the excess.

i got a kayak cart from Academy today. Looks pretty nice. Ran me 60bucks or so.

Just pay close attention to the slime. It can grow mildew or mold if left alone for too long.
