Yota,

What about scent? :?:

With all the soft plastics mentioned, is scent used on any? Do smallies "spit out" worms like largemouth can?

Seems I heard of some "wacko" on the Middle who would insert sponges in his tube baits and inject them with pureed killifish  .

Wonder who would something crazy like that :?:  .

Though I haven't caught a smallmouth yet myself, my brother caught one on the Middle Brazos. We had disturbed some frogs and as they jumped into the water they quickly disappeared so we tied on some tiny torpedoes and proceeded to catch over 10 12" spotted bass. They were schooling in the open, maybe spawning, it was March at the time, and on one cast to a fish that was hanging a bit further away than the others my brother caught this smallie. I havent been able to catch one since, but still trying.

Yes, I had to get a dedicated blender for "bait juice".

I would never use my shake blender for that  !!!

I was worried that traces of whey based protein might spook em off  .

Whey protein probably doesn't smell much like killis but I once bought a cheapo off-brand whey mix trying to save money. It might as well been pureed baitfish

I agree, FB.

As far as the fight goes, in a river the only thing I can compare the fight of a 5-6 pound smallie to is maybe a really fresh river run Steelhead of similar size. Both punctuate their battles with slashing runs, charging the boat/yak, cartwheeling and other gillrattling madness :o 8) .

LMB can't carry a Smallies jockstrap, IMO  .

Back in my younger days my girlfriend and I would head up to the Gila River in New Mexico and fly fish for smallies. Never caught anything close the trophies YY posted but they are great fighters. The show they put on is fantastic. If you put a LMB's in a cage fight with a Smallie I'd expect to see the Smallie gain some weight. Wooly Buggers were the ticket and the camping with a babe was icing on the cake! :D

Sorry no pictures.

I"ve got a buddy who knows where they are in Canyon and we plan on heading up there sometime for drop-shot action. One of these days.

FF, sounds like your smallmouth trip was a multi species opportunity.

I hope you sent your girlfriend home with a "red snapper" as well   .

Picture of Lake Murray smallmouth. Notice how my dads left arm is super long. I called him out on it as we were taking the picture. If my memory serves right, that was about a 3.5 lb fish.

These fish were both caught at a father/son tournament that my dad and I fish yearly. There are normally about 50 entries, and we have won it twice.

These pics are from 2003 and 2004. I don't have any pics that are more recent. I need to start taking my camera more often.

I have posted several pics of CPR'd 20-21.5" river Smallmouth that I consider to be Trophies.

However, I have found that 95% of the customers that fish with me have never caught one over 14" from a Texas River.

I am not a smallmouth expert, but I have had the opportunity to fish with one of the best smallmouth anglers anywhere. His name is Jeff Little and he fishes MD, PA and VA. Check out his site for good smallmouth insights at blueridgekayakfishing.com.

I grew up fishing the James River in Va. for some sweet Bronzebacks!! I miss it. Make a trip every year but am in the Houston area now and have done some lite bronzeback work but never the Brazos.

Maybe you guys would like to take me and show me the ropes. Shane, whatya think?
