Foggy Day in Galveston
Foggy Day in Galveston
Just wanted to make sure everyone made it safe to and from if you went fishing today...The fog was really dense on the way to galveston. I couldnt see the blinking yellow lights until I was about 20 yards from them
Dont get me wrong, I LOVE fishing foggy weather, I just dont like driving in it!
It cleared up this morning in the bay, then, after I changed locations, the fog rolled back in around noon...
Oh yeah, for the report :
Fished a few spots in West Bay, nothing but reds, even though I was hoping for some trout With the limited visibility, low light, and lack of wind, I decided to NOT throw my soft plastics, and instead worked a super spook. It worked. My FIRST cast landed a 21" red...Well, actually, he hit it, dropped it, hit it again, dropped it, and finally took the whole thing. I had one take the SS and just ran...Drag was screaming, he wasnt slowing down, but after about 10 seconds, he just dropped it
I had a limit in about 10 minutes, but I was releasing as I went, cause I dont want no stinkin reds JK, I brought some home last week...saving room for some trout!
I dont throw too many topwaters, but Ive grown to use them more and more...Just a few tips from experience. Dont try and set the hook, cause you will pull it away from the 90% of the time. Also, if they hit and miss, let it sit and twitch it a couple times...This morning, 3 of the reds I caught missed the first time, but would come back and take it. Finally, try different patterns, cause some days they want em worked faster, and some days they will hit em when you work it slooowww with lots of pauses..
oh yeah, forgot: today was my maiden voyage of my new yak (a tarpon 140) I love it!

Good fish dude. Congrats on the new yak.
And those are good tips for working topwaters. More often than not the reds really seem to miss it the first time. I just don't think they're as well equipped for eating a top as a lot of the other fish. It's just not in their nature with that down-turned mouth. It takes some solid nerves to sit their and not set the hook huh!? A lot of people don't have the discipline to do that.

Congratulations, you got it made......just waiting on that new BS rod!!!
Edited: Oh, and really, really nice looking paddles!
LOL...BS rod...I dont think billy will like the acronym!
No disrespect to Billystix, but just shorting the name. IMHO he donates as much or more than any of the other product promoters.

This summer I fished the flats throwing only tops in bone/silver spook jr. and they would miss the frist I would just shake the rod and then hang on they would slam it. One fish missed it three times and on the last he made a big loop and hit head on the only thing that kept it from going in his crushers was the last hook was in the top and bottom lips he had the spook jr. in his mouth.

Nice report and great looking yak. I second the topwater hookset advice. A slight, split-second delay in the hookset after you see/hear the strike will increase the hook-up ratio. I learned this from my bass fishing days with Heddon Chuggers, Tiny Torpedos, and Hula Poppers. I also learned my lessons from trying to set the hook too soon (and too hard) and having that bait with big treble hooks fly straight at me at 80 mph .
