5/14/19 - Biggest Bass of my life

Post by shoffer »

I decided to hit a little bass hole I found recently for a couple of hours this morning. I launched around 9 am and fished until 12:30. I caught two little ones trolling a Big Bites suicide shad in 3-5 feet of water on a 1/16 oz jighead. I also trolled a little wake bait and caught two more, but they got unbuttoned while trying to haul them in. But I did manage to haul in this 7.9 lb., 21 inch, monster on a topwater frog thrown at the bank by some cypress tree roots. Caught at the peak of the major solunar feed today, also.

that's a hog - congratulations
- most of my big fish have been on little flies - size 8
in fact, it's been a joke for a dozen years to ask me which fly

I must say I've always favored fishing in saltwater over fresh, but Shoffer's 7.9-lb. lunker bass & Kickingback's recent crappie success are making me re-think my position!
Great report & impressive bass you got there, Capt. Shoffer... Hope your secret "bass hole" isn't too far from Houston & still has a few LUNKERS left. Ha ha.
Glad I bought the Texas "combo" license that allows fishing salty & freshwater. Let's go bassing, men!

DD, I grew up fishing reservoirs in a semi-vee with my dad, and it's just not my favorite thing to do - in summer, 9am sun is too hot.
The exception is springtime, and now is a great time to be out with big hen bass not too far from their spawning redds.
Hill country streams with a fly rod is different - it's always 15 degrees cooler in a cypress tunnel than on the road where you parked, and 2pm summertime fishing is fine.
We didn't get too many white bass reports this year, probably because the rivers were blown out - that's an early spring thing, but with good timing, a 25-fish bag limit is possible.
