Winter fishing in West Bay

Post by MontleyYak »

Low tides and cold water can be very challenging to a kayak fisherman. However, if you are patient enough and willing to grind, it can be rewarding. With this recent trip, I expected to stuck in the mud and go from pond to pond with no sign of activity. ...which all came true. I remember being skunked quite a few times last year around the same time. Therefore, I gave myself a goal of just catching 1 fish no matter what size or species.

The water was very low and clear and the wind was no more than 5 mph. After spending 1.5 hrs of searching, I finally spooked a redfish. Instead of feeling disappointed, I was happy to see one. This was promising!! Where there is one means that there might be more. I stayed positive and started working the drain of every major bayous. Eventually after grinding out for few hours I finally landed a solid 26 in redfish on Gulf Mullet. Immediately after stringing my catch, I hooked up to another one on the same spot. Since my drag was set so tight, the hook came and I lost the fish 15 ft from the kayak.

Here is video I made of the trip and I have also added some pictures. Merry Christmas everyone and have Happy New Year!
