Trinity Bay for a Change of Pace - 10/1/18
Trinity Bay for a Change of Pace - 10/1/18
DandyDon and I were tired of West Bay and needed some new water. So we decided to launch at Double Bayou on the east shoreline of Trinity yesterday at first light, and we fished until around 12:30 pm. We used to love fishing that bay until floods, salinity, and shallow water drove us away.
Winds were 5-9 from the east, so we figured that protected shoreline would be holding some fish, but we were concerned about freshwater runoff. Tide was flowing out all morning and Double Bayou was fresh on top, but I hoped that the inside the bay salinities were decent and would be better on the bottom, so I planned to fish near the bottom most of the day. As we made our way out of the bayou, I saw some reds rolling at the mouth, so we figured it would be a redfish day if nothing else.
And for me, it was. I boated three reds - the first out of a school that was busting bait and white shrimp at the mouth of an outflow where we also had working birds (!), the second deep in the marsh on a Buggs, and the third - a 28 inch beast - while trolling a Glo Down South 4 inch on a 1/4 oz jighead the shoreline. I also caught maybe 15 small sand trout under the birds, and a 16-inch speck working the shoreline.
Really nice day - temps were comfortable, no rain, and fairly strong outgoing tide all morning. Water temps were 75 degrees in the bay and 77 in the marsh. Fall fishing appears to have begun.

As Shoffer reported, Fall fishing has begun & Trinity Bay is back! I was happy when I tasted that Oak Island baywater & detected adequate salinity for Speckled trout. While Shoffer was limiting out on slot redfish, I landed about a dozen small sand trout & four speckled trout, only one a keeper at 18".
The early action was exciting as we fished surrounded by diving terns feeding on some tiny baitfish. Every cast got a strike, but most of my catches were those pesky sand trout.
As water temperatures continue to fall, the bigger specks should show up & we'll be there for the party.
Next trip I'm hoping Shoffer fixes his trolling motor so he can haul me around in the style to which I'm now accustomed!

I am glad. On the way down to the launch, Don and I were commenting about your absence from the board.Cuervo Jones wrote:This pleases me.

I have been busy and traveling. No kayak fishing. But lots of this:
But my travels are almost done and I’ll soon be back to stalking the ponds, marshes, rivers, bays, and reservoirs of Tejas in my kayak.
Sorry for the derail.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Charlie, all the redfish were caught by the Shof. For some reason he caught reds & I caught specks (plus sand trout). Maybe my retrieve was too fast! Next trip I aim for a glorious Grand Slam. Hard to beat a hot seafood platter of specks, redfish & flounder!

Nice report guys! Good info too that the fish are moving more to the inside now, but maybe not quite so far yet. Helpful!
And holy crap you resurrected Mr Cuervo!
Good to see you buddy!
Was missing your hilarious antics with pumpkin spice landing nets and marsh warloks!
Maybe we'll have a frankenreport soon?!

Nice job, guys. I may try to get out this weekend if the weather (and my wife) allow. Not sure where yet but let me know if you have any interest most likely Sunday morning.

Between going to the Rockets on Thursday, the Astros on Friday, and the Texans on Sunday, I was unable to make it out. I am seriously Jones-ing for a trip. As they say, the tug is the drug and I need a fix.shoffer wrote:Let us know, Randy Watson!

That "Randy Watson" stuff goes over my head every time, but it's damn funny! With Halloween coming up, young Mike (Watson) could wow the fans in his "Randy Watson" dreadlocks & hiphuggers! I'd hire him to go to court like that. Right lines to all you freaks.
