Oso Bay 8-3-18

Post by Redf1shR1ch »

Headed out around 8 AM to Oso Bay with my girlfriend and a friend. Caught a few perch and my friend caught a small speckled trout. My girlfriend however caught we believe is a Texas Dog fish. I attached two pictures. Anyone ever catch one of these and are they poisonous? Looking to head up the Texas coast tomorrow to try my luck.

That is a gulf toadfish. I've read that their slime contains a toxin that can cause skin irritation but I never tested to see if it's true and avoid touching them when I catch one. Best idea is to use fish grippers and pliers to remove the hook then let them go on their way.

I got one of those a couple of years ago in West Bay. The most common name I got from replies to that post was a toadfish. But I have seen that dogfish is used as well. I do not know about the poisonous aspect. It is slimy and has spines, enough for me to not give it a hug!

Some times of the year they are prolific at the Rockport concrete pier on the south end of the beach. They are nasty. I always heard them called toadfish.

Not poisonous, just ugly as sin! Elias Fishing (YouTube) has done a catch and eat before. Wild!

If you take a close look at my avatar, you'll see one i had as a pet for many, many years. Caught it it a coke can in Christmas Bay.
Yeah, they are butt ugly, but really pretty cool. Although they have some sharp spines, and supposedly mildly venomous,
really pretty harmless as long as you handle them gently.
