Schools are back. 04/29/2018

Post by F.O.C. »

I got to my spot just before 6am. Did a quick scan with my night vision monocular and saw some splashing at about 50 yards. Unloaded and paddled to my 1st school of reds about 6:20. Made two casts and they laid down and disappeared. Paddled to another larger school and when I was almost within casting distance, 4-5 pelicans swooped down and flew right overhead scaring the school. Waited for a few minutes, tossed at some ripples and landed my 1st red(24in) at 6:35. Moved about 20 yards and caught my 2nd red(19in). 3rd red(21in) was caught 10 yards to the right. Found another school and caught my 4th red(20in). The reds scattered after sunrise so I drifted a few yards to a brown spot of grass. Tossed a lure into it and caught my 5th red(22in). I had my limit by 7:40.

The water was clear and light winds. I was on my Atak in the high seat position and could still touch the ground to stop drifting. Water so shallow some of the backs were out. My only lure was a white Tsunami tidal shrimp hooked weedless. Looks just like a gulp shrimp but is softer, cheaper, and smells like a trout slick.

I can't remember the last time I had a quick limit of reds. Hopefully stays this way for a few months. There were also decent size sheep heads tailing too. :D

Nice job on those early-morning redfish, FOC! I'm now going to shop for some of those smelly Tidal Tsunami lures you mentioned. Better than Gulps? Wow.
I'm also curious about that night monocular you mentioned. Can you reply with some information on that piece of gear?
Thanks & tight lines.

Some days are the blessed days for sure. Stow it in your mind's memory and cherish it. Not many like it.
Well done!

Dandydon, those are the plastics bought on an impulse at walmart. Too cheap to pass up. I think anything white or clear would have worked this morning.

I got the monocular a few years ago. Its not the best but it does the job. I keep it around my neck and tucked in my life jacket.

Here are some old pics from a review I did on it.

Thanks for the info on your monocular, FOC. I might consider getting one, too. Good work!
