Our TIC program in Texas has grown to 20 classrooms. Since January, these classrooms have been raising rainbow trout from eggs in refrigerated aquariums.
Today all the schools from Houston and Katy, along with Brandeis HS in SA brought their trout fry to the river. I know there were some jealous GRTU board members in a board meeting who didn't get to play.
Probably should have taken a photo at the BBQ stand where we met up, but first photo is the convoy arriving at the river.
Checking the babies after their 4-hour journey into the unknown.
You brought fish, that's just what we needed.
Hauling coolers of fish to the river
can't believe the results these classrooms achieved
it's worth a portrait
If I was a fish, I'd want to live here
getting river legs, moving the coolers to the current
adding river water to the coolers to acclimate the babies
future conservationists
our gracious host John D., and Jimbo, who keeps us straight with TPWD
one way to do this is net the fish, turn around and release them - the go-pro's gotta help
or dip the cooler and let them swim out
Every school here today was an aquatic science class, mostly the teachers and their families
but we also had about 10 high school students who came out to help
we have to report to TPWD the numbers and size of fish we put in the river, in accordance with our permit
some of the teachers came with their count
other coolers, we counted as we put them in the river
somewhere I should have taken a photo of Matt B, my partner, who handles the program in Houston and Katy, and kudos to Houston Fly Fishers for their contributions.
but I guess we sometimes get too excited about this part of it
Today, we put over 1300 2-3" trout fingerlings in the river. Odds are 2 dozen or more of these fish will reach full growth.
But raising fish isn't the goal of this program - the goal is raising conservationists.

thanks guys, it's fun - have two elementary school field trips to release their trout through next month - still 8 schools to go...
