Trout on the Guadalupe
Trout on the Guadalupe
Fished the Guadalupe walked down stream from 306 bridge to a couple of good holes....Not a kayak trip but wanted to say thank you to the nice young man in his kayak who helped net this monster Rainbow and take the picture for me....I know kayaker are a generally nice folks but does the heart good to see respectful and helpful young people.

That’s a beauty! What is that fly? It almost looks like it got bent a little in the fight.

Re: Trout on the Guadalupe
not going to steal from our OPs thunder with a photo, but my best is 27" and 8 lbs
(though if you check any of the other Guadalupe threads, I've probably posted it there, along with some other big bows - search on the forum "we're gonna need a bigger net")
I know of many 9 and 10 lb rainbows released back to the river

Re: Trout on the Guadalupe
They don’t. They’re stocked that big. Trout Unlimited makes sure there are some monsters mixed in with the usual stockers that get plucked and fried by the marshmallow and power bait crowds.Tombo wrote:I need to fish a place like this. Very nice Trout. Have not made it up to the river this year. Need to work on that.

Re: Trout on the Guadalupe
no, mr. Jones is not entirely correct.
I've caught big fish I know were living there - because of where I caught them, and their condition - body ratios, fin condition, wear and tear.
You have to get away from the pounded spots, which are also the stocking points, in order to find fish living in wild niches, and to appreciate the Guadalupe tailwater - this is a recurring theme - Both Sides.
Certainly, no 7, 8, 9 and 10-lb fish are stocked. GRTU specifically buys/stocks 16-20" fish - some 5 lbers? yes.
This is a nice wild-living beastie, but not in the 5 largest I've caught.
If you've ever fished the San Juan, those are stocked fish also. Our tailrace fished so well in the 1990s, the most renowned San Juan guide then wintered and guided here.
