Topwater Beatdown Continues -- 6/10/2017
Weather: Clear sky, sunny with SE winds from 10-15 mph
Tide: Strong incoming (AM); Weak outgoing (PM)
Lure(s): Pink Skitterwalk (Trout), Gulp Mantis Shrimp in white/chartreuse (flounder)
Depth: 3’ - 6’ over shell (trout); 1’ – 3’ over mud and scattered shell (flounder)
Bay waters in Galveston were smooth this morning with trout green water and good tidal movement. Lots of bait getting busted and slicks were popping up everywhere along the shoreline.
Today was catch and release for me except for a couple trout I kept that were bleeding like stuck pigs.
First blow up was 5:45 AM under the full moon.
Then blowups started occurring almost every cast from daylight until about 7:30 AM.
The bite slowed down some after 8:00 AM but most of the bites were quality fish.
Even caught a flounder on skitterwalk working the lure along spartina grass.
Decided to make a move and target some flounder in deeper water for a couple hours during the outgoing tide. Caught all of the fish on Gulp mantis shrimp in white and chartreuse. The flounder were stacked up along riprap armored shorelines in areas where shad and finger mullet were present. Caught a few fish up tight against the rocks and these fish were the bigger ones.
Even got a nice surprise while flounder fishing.
Total tally for today was 25 trout between 16" and 25" and 12 flounder between 14.5” and 20.50”.
