When is the best time if year to go offshore out of Galveston area for Mahi Mahi, and any recommendations on a guide for that trip? Looking to take 4-6 people. And go....

Sorry, I don't have any names of guides that would be a good hire for a trip like that. The only trips I've ever taken and been into thick schools of Dorado, were on a private boat.
Here's what I know about timing. It is best to go when the grass matts are coming in thick, so summer. Dorado hug those larger grass matts and patrol the edges in schools. We trolled those edges and caught them until we were tired of catching them. But what I'd recommend you do is call three or four charter operations out of Galveston and Freeport and ask about when the best time is. I would also recommend you don't limit your species on an offshore trip unless it is to exclude one or two. Would hate to spend the money it takes to get a private charter and come home with an empty chest because the one species I wanted did not cooperate.

Speaking of grass (sargassum), where the heck has it been the last few years?
The grass flotillas usually made an appearance in the spring/early summer.
I guess the currents have changed quite a bit recently.
