Redfish Bite is still Strong on the Flats

Post by TrailChaser »

Still hitting that skinny water and getting plenty of action. Used live mullllet w/hook and limited out in about 3hrs yesterday in Keller Bay.(I need to try throwing some plastic at'em, but there are finger mullet in abundance and one or two casts with the net is all it takes to get plenty of bait)

Got most of the action on camera, but I have to put a *profanity warning* on this video link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjK-QR640fM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

*I saw the video that gave me the stringer lock idea on here, and would like to give credit but can''t seem to find the video again. Anyone know the vid/member I'm referring to?

That water looks sweet. Winds must have laid down this week!

I used to fish Keller bay when my brother lived in port lavaca. I had heard that the "pocket" ( the area to the left just before exiting Keller toward the main bay) is not what it once was in terms of good fishing. Any truth to that? It used to hold clear salty water even in times after floods and have lots of nice trout.

From what I've heard there are still guides boating clients out there pretty regularly. I personally haven't checked it out, but I may make the 3 mile(each way) paddle over there sometime. My buddies nephew recently won some tourney with trout he caught in Keller.(not sure where exactly) I think he won biggest trout and biggest stringer.

I love eating trout, but when it comes to pure awesome fishing it's hard to beat sightcasting reds in skinny water.

Nice report.

I am going to throw out a friendly challenge for you. Leave the cast net at home for the next sight fishing trip. If the water is shallow, which I presume it is, then get some soft plastics like Salt Water Assassins or Flukes and fish them only on a hook. A short jerky retrieve makes them look just like and injured mullet.

You will be addicted. Then after some amount of time put that rig down and get yourself a fly rod and you will be consumed with it. :D

Let us know how it goes,

John
