Finally had a little time to get the Slayer out on the water. Arrived around 5pm and was done at 7pm with a limit of trout, 2-Spanish Macs and 2-15" bluefish. Fish were as far out as I have ever seen them, all the waders would do was watch me hammer them.

Artificials or bait soaking? Haven't ever caught a bluefish. But they're mighty tasty!

Everything was caught on a 3/4 oz gold spoon. Probably the furthest I have ever caught them too.
Re: SLP Saturday 6-6-2015
The key to making blue fish taste good is to bleed them and cut the red meat out.... after that they are much better than specks.

Nice trout. I think the reason those yankees like the bluefish so much is a lack of better options.

Haha. I'm a Texan that lived for a time in Yankeeland and I caught and consumed bluefish. I really liked them pan fried in seasoned bread crumbs served with tartar sauce. They were also good smoked. They have a strong flavor, but I like them if they are really fresh.Milkjug wrote:Nice trout. I think the reason those yankees like the bluefish so much is a lack of better options.
We also caught a lot of striped bass ( very tasty) a few Black Sea bass (yum) flounder and a few others. I always thought fishing was amazingly productive up there but the seasons are short. The shellfish were great. It was very easy to find quahogs, mussels, soft shelled clams, and oysters.
But you are right, bluefish is not for the faint of heart. You really know you are eating fish with bluefish. A lot of the folks I knew up there wouldn't eat it.

Bluefish are fun to catch but the only one's worth eating are what we called "snappers". They are a blast to catch on the fly rod.Milkjug wrote:Nice trout. I think the reason those yankees like the bluefish so much is a lack of better options.
The kids would eat them as fast as the wife took them out of the frying pan. 12 - 15 inches taste great! Beyond that bluefish are an oily and fishy tasting fish as karstopo said.
