Prefrontal Bite

Post by jgj5533 »

With the warm weather and a front coming in later in the day, I figured the bite would be on yesterday. I met up with a buddy and we went looking for trout. I started out early with a pink skitterwalk and found a slot red, but no trout. We headed out deeper and I finally found a nice 26" trout on a corky in about 4' of water over shell. Had a a few more hits there, but no hookups.

The sun had been up for a few hours so we started searching shallower coves for signs of fish. We found a large cove stacked with mullet and started working it over with topwaters. I instantly started hooking up with large trout, but I just couldn't get them in the boat. I lost 2 next to the yak and one on a head shake. That happens way too often to me with topwaters, but I just can't put them down. The first trout I actually get in the boat in this cove was just over 27". I lost a few more big ones and caught a 24" before the bite died down.

I kept searching after that, but it seemed like they were done eating for the day. I stopped at one last cove and see some scared mullet again. On my first drift I picked up a couple slot reds and a trout just under 27". I made a few more drifts and picked up a few more nice trout before calling it a day.

It wasn't an amazing day for numbers, but it was for quality. I caught 6 trout, but 5 were over 24". I also managed the 3 slot reds.

Lure- Pink skitterwalk and corky knock off
Tide- Outgoing
wind- 0 until it picked up to about 15 from the sw mid-morning

That was an amazing hour of topwater fishing you had in Zephyer cove even if a few threw the hook:cat: The weather guessers couldn't have been more wrong but thats why there was almost no one on the bay

It was fun, Don. I almost forgot how calm it was until I looked at that first picture you took.
