Sunday Wind and Sun 1/24/15

Post by karstopo »

Neighbor and I got out mid-late morning to the Freeport marsh. Wind was ripping pretty strong out of the west. There was a lot of the recent runoff flowing into the area, so the water was muddy in places and better in others. The tide was pretty low to start off and continued to drop. My neighbor struck first, picking up a slot red on the edge of a deep channel.

I fished the other side of the channel. I got a 21" red on a DSL chicken of the C fishing in about 3' feet of water. But the wind kept giving me problems. I couldn't get staked out for long before pulling free. The wind was messing with my casts. I had trouble judging the crosswinds and missed my targets time and again.

My buddy headed in adding a small trout and flounder on the way in for the slam. I was stuck on the one red. I paused on a mud bank to stretch my legs and make some downwind casts with my TFO minimag. I caught the shell a time or two then the little chartreuse and white Clouser met another resistance in the form of a little red. It was the first time I really chose to use the rod much since getting it for Christmas. I got a great lift bringing in that fish even though the rod was too much for the task. I walked the mud flat fly casting but didn't find any more. In I went thinking about the next time and more fly rod time.

With the strong west wind and all the rain runoff, it was hard to find a place to fish. I really didn't expect anything to hit my fly blind casting into a not very promising stretch of water. The red was a pleasant surprise.
