Sight Fishing the Marsh as of Lately

Post by evergladeskid »

Feels like fall in the marshes of Galveston, cool breezes in the morning, clear skies, minimal bugs, and loads of hungry redfish! Since returning to Galveston at the beginning of September for the fall semester the fishing has been slowly building from pods of tailing redfish on flats to belly crawling fish on these extreme low tides. The action has been great and on par for this time of year, showcasing the potential of the Texas redfishery on the upper coast and making it a dream for guys like me who love to sight fish reds in shallow water on fly and light spin tackle! I have been getting out as much as I possibly can fishing after class and into dark putting solid numbers of fish in the Slayer on most trips. This past week I was privileged to pulled over 30 sight fished reds to the kayak with my best day accounting for 14 of those fish most of which fell victim to my home brewed shrimp fly. Here are some of the best pictures from the past month of fishing here in the marshes surrounding Galveston...

This one was busting bait in a pond behind some grass, so I was forced to peruse on foot

This had to be one of the best colored reds I have ever caught! Pulled out of a school of tailing fish

First double of the season, hooked the first fish on fly and had his buddy show up for the party shortly after and couldn't refuse a DOA jig!

More school fish on fly

Some more double action on fly and spin!

Upper slot red on fly, caught him belly crawling on the low tide

A little black drum action on the fly to mix things up

This one put me in the backing!

This double was epic! Quite a handful!

Looking forward to the action heating up over the next few weeks into the month of November, should see some larger schools start to build with the next cold front push. Hope you guys enjoy the pictures and report thanks for viewing,
Joe

Well done. I'm still getting skunked on the fly rod but I'm determined to catch a Red on it. How do you like your kayak?

 Nice looking fish. Saw you entering the marsh when me and a buddy were leaving. That spot has been productive for me the past few months. This weekend was a little slower but still managed to catch a limit. I need to step up my go pro still shot footage those look great.

Excellent pics and fish. Nothing beats sight casting to reds in the marsh...well almost nothing.
