Fathers and Sons at Bolivar Penn
Csheild and I took our 12 year old boys out this weekend to Bolivar Penn. My son and I started in the marsh and caught slot reds to 27" and one flounder. It was a great day and then kids had a blast.

Charlie and his son fished the beach and ended up with three nice bull reds to 41". The last fish came as his son was reeling in his bait to end the day and WHAM, 37" bull hit it

What bait were you guys using in the surf to catch those bullreds. Also, were you paddling the baits out? Is that why the one fellow has the red life vest on?

Mullet and yes he was paddling the baits out in his kayak. He seems to have perfected this process as last time he went he caught 9 BR's, so this was slow day for him.

Any advice on what his process was? I'm planning to take my dad down to PINS on the weekend of 1-21 and am hoping for as many fish as you guys caught. Was he taking the baits out to the second gut? Was it super far? How much further did he paddle the baits out beyond what you could normally cast with a surf rod? Sorry for all the questions. Looks like you guys had a blast.mschilling wrote:Mullet and yes he was paddling the baits out in his kayak. Cut mullett into 3-4 inch pieces, attach to a 12-15 circle hook with about 7 ounces of weight. Then he would paddle the baits out about 200 yards (much farther than you could ever cast) and wait. His first hook-up wasn't until about 4 hours in. I'm guessing the baits were in about 8-10 feet of water depending on the tides. Hope that helps. Charlie might chime in with some additional information.

MTF, I try to get the baits out past the last s-bar. it seems to work a little better at high tide. never know what they will hit, so I use mullet heads and tails. big circle hook, at least a 14/0. Don't know if it will work good at PINS. I've been fishing Bolivar for quite a while and this seems to work well for us there.MrTexasFreedom wrote:Any advice on what his process was? Great information, guys! Thanks. I'll bring my kayak with us and try these techniques.
Appreciatively,
