HL&P spill way access
HL&P spill way access
Does any one know where to lunch to get to the HL&P spill way or Jack's Pocket, and or directions and how long is the paddle.

HL&P - you'd have to launch from McCollum Park in Beach City and I'm not sure they're open yet. Jack's Pocket - launch from Fort Anahuac

Fort anahuac to the spillway is a helluva loooong paddle
Best bet is to launch from the Fort (at the end of the peninsula) and fish either the left side (in between the peninsula and the shoreline) or the right side (bay - paddle out to the spoil islands across the way and fish the flats or the channel. It would be best if you didn't go alone - there are some pretty big gators in that area.
Just post up when you plan on going and maybe someone will join you or vice/versa you could join them

Re: HL&P spill way access
It's about an 8 mile paddle to the Spillway from Anahuac. I was debating whether or not I would make the trek or not after they closed off McCollum Park, but I decided against it, way too much paddling and not enough fishing. I like to just fish the marsh drains in and around Jacks Pocket at tide changes and go after flounder and reds.
Re: HL&P spill way access
do you launch out of the Fort A. or the Ranger Station?
Re: HL&P spill way access
Friend who lives on the road to McCollum Park said it is supposed to re-open around September.
Supposed to be fixing stairs or something so you don't have to scale the cliffs.
But this is the government so it could be next year - who knows?

Re: HL&P spill way access
stairs will be good for walking up and down - carrying a kayak up the stairs now, that's a little different.
Re: HL&P spill way access
It would be nice to have better access, i seen alot of people get hurt and roll down the hill there trying to carry their yak and gear down there, i wish they would hurry, the time is right to catch some good fish out of there....

I launch from Fort Anahuac just before you get to the end of the levee on the right. On a calm day it is about a 30-45min paddle for me to get to Jacks Pocket.Puckett wrote:do you launch out of the Fort A. or the Ranger Station?
