Finally, something to report.

Post by Tombo »

Started out early this morning hoping to sight cast to some Redfish with the fly rod. Found a small school hammering bait along a grass shoreline. Never even notice my small shrimp fly. After a couple issues getting my fly line hung up on the kayak I put it up.
Went back to fish a shallow lake and found some Reds here and there but same issues with the fly rod.
Put on a small 3" New Penny Gulp shrimp rigged weedless. Next Red I found in shallow water with its back showing and it hammered the small shrimp. Took a picture and let it go (27").
On my way back in a smaller pond the shoreline is a little deeper. Reds would be hard to see, but I have thrown some lures blind casting here with success in the past.
This time I threw a short popping cork and got hammered after the second cast. This fish was bigger and took twice as long to get in. Had it foul hooked in the belly and went 29".
Felt good to hear the drag singing.

Glad to hear you are seeing pods. We spent lots of time poling around LHL Saturday (8am-2pm) and it was SLOW. Caught a few small ones in a cut draining the flat but very few reds spotted up on the flats. I guess they need another cool front to get things rolling. November seems better for me.

We saw no pods in a marsh lake here on the Upper Texas coast on Saturday. My neighbor did see some the previous weekend in another lake. There were lots of med. small shrimp in the lake we visited Saturday. A Trout we caught at the mouth of the drain from the lake stomach was stuffed with shrimp. I can definitely relate to fly line tangles. Glad you got your line pulled anyway. Thanks for sharing.

Saw tons of shrimp and mullet and a few single and double crawlers and cruisers yesterday. But no schools or pods. Caught a couple of flounder but no fly rod action for me either. Been a weird, long year.

Tombo,

I keep taking out my fly rod and never seem to use it. It's hard to put down what works.

The fly rod would have worked if I had less crap with me.

Nope, just cruising along some grass lines and back marsh. Does not matter where right now. Only advice I can give now is keep moving till something shows.
My time up around Matagorda and Galveston helped with non sight casting. Checked out deeper shorelines, points and small channels.
