Rod for Small Topwaters

Post by ben_beyer »

I have some of the Heddon Tiny Torpedos that are 1/4 ounce and 1 7/8" long. I mostly use these in tight cover and I've also used them to get finicky bass to bite.

I've been using a 6' 6" medium/fast spinning rod to throw these but I'm wondering if that's the right rod. The rod I was using broke on my last trip and I'm wondering if a 6' medium/fast or 6' 8" medium/extra fast (Wacky Style rod) would be better?

What do you guys think?

I fish everything on a 20 year old Ugly Stick that I don't even remember what it is classified as, lol. I think the shimano on it is almost as old.
It's "ultra-light" tackle, why not an ultralight rig?

It's all in the tip. You can throw very light lures on a medium rod if it has a fast tip (lots of flex in the top 1/3 of the rod). If you make your line a stiff 20# braid like spider wire, you can throw a country mile and be very accurate with your light lures.
