Are you looking for a developed campsite, or primitive camping along a river? You are not far from Village Creek, the Neches, and the Sabine, all of which offer fantastic kayak/camping, though not stellar fishing, in my experience. Stubblefield, on the north end of Conroe, is a great place to camp, and I used to love the upstream paddle up the San Jacinto. Beautiful, very few people, and decent fishing, especially in the spring for White Bass and Crappie. Might help to know a little more about what you're looking for, and why, specifically, you were not impressed with the other places. I used to love Sam Houston when I lived in Conroe. Martin Dies is a pretty cool place too, though I've never fished there.

Looks like Lake Conroe will fit your wants.
