Water Moccasins on LCR

I did an overnighter from Little to Big Webberville with the lady and our pups a couple weekends ago when the weather was nice and cool. I was just releasing a ~3 lb largemouth when I heard one of our dogs yelp. I saw her near the shore furiously swimming back to the boat and immediately suspected the worst. A few hours later, the vet at the emergency clinic confirmed that our dog took a snake bite, likely a water moccasin, to the eye. We elected not to pay for the anti-venom, knowing we'd have plenty of big bills to come with her likely losing the eye, but she pulled through and is learning to adjust to the pirate life.

My point? Be careful with your 4-legged friends out there. The vet said they've been seeing a lot more snake bites with the weather cooling down. Next time I take one of the dogs with me, I'm keeping them away from shore; that's where the big fish are anyway!

that sucks glad your dog made it, i walked right by one not too long ago with my daughter..when i came back down the trail and saw it i freaked and hit it with a 6 foot post about 20 times till it was 2 feet underground..i like snakes but when it comes to the family's safety i chose the family every time..

I'm no expert and hav'nt tried it ....but sometimes electrical voltage neutralizes the venom. Have read articles about people taking small stun guns afield when their bird dogs get hit by rattlers. Worse comes to worse , stick a wire in a spark plug cap and use that. Google it and see what comes up.

The girl is around 5 foot 5 Inches tall.
This one was on the bank at the swimming hole back in July.
It was a wonder it did not get the dogs that were with them.
