Best Place to Camp < 100 Miles from Houston
I've always ended up somewhere in Conroe or Huntsville State Park.
Where should I be checking out this spring?

Thanks for the replies and pm's.
I will be sure to check out most, if not all of the suggestions.

How about Matagorda Island State Park?
Re: Best Place to Camp < 100 Miles from Houston
Quintana,
Martin Dies,
Oak Thicket on Lake Fayette,
Bastrop,
Buescher,
Lake Bastrop north and south,
Matagorda Bay,
Brackenridge,
Stephen F. Austin.
A couple of these may be a little more than 100 miles from downtown Houston, but not by much and they would definitley be worth trying out regardless.

There are a few places right off the roads (100-200yds or so) in the National forest around Lake Conroe, especially the upper east side. You kind of have to scope them out; they are not formal "camping" sites, but as far as I know, you can legally camp anywhere in the forest, and there is lots of it surrounding both Lake Conroe and Lake Livingston. To get REAL seclusion, pak your stuff on your yak and paddle to a good looking remote section and set up camp.
I agree, Cagel is good and so is Double Lake state rec area.

Re: Best Place to Camp < 100 Miles from Houston
Gibbons Creek Reservoir, located 21-mi from Anderson (about 74 mi from FM-1960 @ Hwy 6) is a decent place for camping, especially for kayakers.
At 140-mi from Loop 610, Coleta Creek Reservoir is outside of your distance-perameter; but well worth the few extra miles to get away from urban concentrations. CCR is located approx 15mi SW of Victoria, on Hwy 59 (heading toward Laredo). The park and lake are operated by Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (versus TPWD). The reservoir serves as cooling-water supply for a CoGen power-plant lake, which offers some fishery-benefits. Really nice lake to yak-tour, and fish for several species.
