I've bought a few blades from knifecenter.com they have a lot of options... I agree about the cheap stuff being... well, cheap.

I like my Ontario Knives 22" machete with the handguard. It goes with me on every Brazos River trip.

I ordered the Cold Steel Magnum Kukri Machete today .... hope it's as good as it looks. I just have a cheapo from Academy now and a good machete is important to have. I did like the hand guard on the Ontario also and the fact that it is 1095 steel .. wish they had a better sheath.
BTW .. the knifecenter website is a very nice site .... their price on the CS Kukri was 30% less and up to 50% less on some of the expensive ones like the kershaw and the woodsman.

this looks like a great compromise for a camp knife
this keeps the size & weight down from even the small machetes
and it's reasonably priced

well actually I changed the order to the standard size instead of the magnum. I'm only 5'7" and decided that I wanted something more my size, easier to carry for now and once I'm working again then I can add a real swinger like the 22" Ontario with a plastic sheath for serious clearing.

That bushman with the hollow handle sure would make a good survival spear in an emergency.

Well the Cold Steel Kukri came in today. It feels nice in the hand and I chopped up a 2x4 with it very easily ..... the shape of the blade and the heavy forward section of the blade does chop well and it's just the right size for me to comfortably carry on my side when needed. The 1055 steal is easy to put a very sharp edge on ... now if the edge will maintain easily.
It came with a large Cold Steel sticker on the side of the blade and once I got it pealed off there was still a lot of glue on the blade so I rubbed it down with alcohol to clean it and the nice "Protective coating" rubbed right off like it was cheap flat black paint which I'm sure it is. Do yall suggest just a light spray of flat black or any better suggestions??
I think for the money it will work very well and I will be happy with it.

The "protective coating" is paint,sooo.

Use mine regular and don't even worry about it.I hit it with some oil every now and then!

The last Ontario machete I bought had the hand guard,I dont like it. I have pretty large hands and I keep banging my knuckles against the guard.

X2. I dont use mine regular and I rarely do more than hit it with a file and put it up. if it gets really bad, ill squirt a little oil of some sort (usually WD-40) on it. Mine came from the local saw shop though (not a cold steel). its 24" long, full tang, and hones/cuts/chops better than any machette I've ever owned rarely needs sharpening and I abuse the heck out of it. only cost $20.
