Building an 18' poling skiff

Post by Tombo »

Not kayak related but same principle. Got some plans from bateau.com for an 18' poling skiff using stitch and glue method. Tired of very high prices for small poling skiffs and my shop is almost done.

I just ordered plans for the FS18 from them today. In the same boat as you I'm tired of the high prices for a decent poling skif. Hope to see pics of your build. And good luck with it.

I'll be watching this one. Bateau plans are top notch and no doubt they have some of the easiest build designs available.

How much does building a skiff like this cost, not including all the time you put into building it.

I suggest you follow along with Shamrock, he is already attaching stuff. My shop is not plumbed for electricity and it will be couple months till I get started.

I'm thinking $3,000 - $3,500. I've already spent about $800 on epoxy, fiberglass tape/cloth, and fillers. Spent another $800 on wood. I'm sure I will need to order more epoxy and cloth, paint, hull fitting, etc. So my guest-a-ment is $3,000. Guess we'll see. :?

Well?
Acquired too many projects with putting our home up for sale, moving a relative out and putting that house up for sale so I bought a used skiff when I sold my bay boat.
Its an East Cape Gladesmen with a 20hp motor. I still have the plans so when my shop is not a storage room I plan on building the Flats Stalker skiff.
When I want to catch fish, I still do better in the kayak.

Did Shamrock ever get his boat finished? I was following it along and then, well, it kind of just died. I know how that goes, you get antsy wanting to finish it and the pictures stop, the online updates stop, and then a while later you remember that you were keeping track of the build online. Just havent seen any updates on his boat forever and would love to see if finished out (if thats the case).
