Neons Sabalo 12
Neons Sabalo 12
Yall are not going to believe this! I am building a boat! Yup, thats right. Not a paddle board, not a surfboard, but a genuine fishing kayak.
Re: Neons Sabalo 12
Took a little extra time and glued these patterns to the wood, ruff cut them with the band saw, and sanded them true.
Started test fitting all the panels and realized I made a mistake!
So I had to re cut 2 frame panels. I'm sure it wont be the only mistake I make on this build.
Now that looks better.
Hopping to get all the scuppers glued up and frames tacked together in the next few days. Still not exactly sure how this boat is going to be finished off.
Re: Neons Sabalo 12
It's about time you started this thing....you sure like the inner framework (honneycomb-core) projects Neon....What ply. thickness are you using..asuming it's marine...
Re: Neons Sabalo 12
5mm luan, just like my jem board. One of these days if I make it to the big city I may pick up some marine ply, but not for this one
Re: Neons Sabalo 12
Got the frames temporarily tacked together.
Also finished the 4 bottom ply panels.
Roughly stitched things together. Starting to look like a boat Now its time to cut some strips. Almost everything else is cedar.

Iamdamoder, I sent you my number.
I started getting my wood inventory on and forgot I had this stuff.
Found it on the side of the river a few months ago. Somebody must have tossed it out of their truck. It looked like it was part of a door or something. So I loaded up on the old paddle board You can really carry some stuff on that thing.

Thanks for the posts. Going to be fun watching another 'yak build!
Re: Neons Sabalo 12
Cut all kinds of strips the other day.
Got the 4 upper hull panels done. It was a lot of work.
Almost time to start gluing this thing together!

Dayum, you are making some boat now. I don't know how you can stay focused with the river so close to home.
Re: Neons Sabalo 12
I'm really cooking on this thing!
Its really looking like a boat now. A fish catching machine!

Looks great!
Re: Neons Sabalo 12
Dam good lookin even at this stage,be interesting to see the final weight, doing SS&G with the lower hull ply will make a difference. How much I wander ?
MM
PS what are the straps made of and does the boat stay stable enough whilst working on it ?

Re: Neons Sabalo 12
Thanks for the compliments!
I am really trying to watch my weight on this one. awoodman wants me to weigh it before I put all the internal structure in, as if it was a canoe.
MM, its just some old 1" ratchet straps. It actually works really well. Doesn't move around to much. Even sanding wasn't bad. Plus I got those things clamped in the saw horses.
I taped it off and finished filleting the out side of the hull.
This thing has good lines.

Re: Neons Sabalo 12
More progress!
Next is glassing the inside. All of the inside framework is already cut out so I hope things move along smoothly.

Re: Neons Sabalo 12
Neon..glassing the inside can be a challenge....good looking multi-chine hull ....
Re: Neons Sabalo 12
Yup glassing the inside was challenging. Did it in 2 halves.
Not very neat but will work.
awoodman, 24.5 pounds so far.

Re: Neons Sabalo 12
Coated all of the inside parts with epoxy.
Test fit all the parts, looks good. Fixin to glue them all in place. Really want to get this thing out on the water. And the only way that is going to happen......is if I finish building it So I guess I better get back to work! But not tomorrow, taking the day off

Back to work! Filleting this frame in is a lot of filleting! Also been working on the top deck panels.
Set them in place just to set them there. I will keep on keeping on tomorrow
