Got a little done to the boat today

Image
This boat is going to be long and skinny
I found some cedar 2 bye 6 so I am building the bottom and side panel out of strips 1 1/2 inches wide.
Works pretty good so far

Image

This may be old hat to some but might help some of the new guys ,first I laid out my widths every 12 inches ,then drove a nail into the wood as I measured.

Image

then I took a strip and bent it around the curve clamping it and then marking out the panel so it can be cut.

Image

More later
Ron

Old hat but still good to post. I lay out the same way with 4d finish nails. Looks like you're doing good.

Gerald
Do you flush the bottom on the outside of the boat or set it where you are just inside corner to inside corner so you can run a fillet?
Hey if this boat needs a Spanish name how about speedy Gonzales

"Speedy Ronzalles"

I like to rest the side panels on top of the keel panel, but it's no biggie. Whatever works. With 4, 5, 6, and more panels I just butt them at the angle they come together. I never try to fit them close. I like a little goopie in the crack...but not enough to use spacers. Again...it's no biggie.

"Speedy Ron" for short...

Got a little more done to the boat today, I sawed out the bottom leaving a little outside the line and tomorrow I will go back and take a belt sander and bring it into the line.

I laid up the curve for the side panel and glued one of them up today.
I like the strip stitch and glue more each time I use it.Image

1 1/2" strips on the side panels too? I really want to see a photo of the "go together" at the bow and stern, please! And another of the side panel cut out, before and after the cuts, if you would please. Thanks so much!
I'm learning...slowly
Thanks for your patience,
Red

I will take a couple pics of the layout and finished panels and stitching of the boat.
So far I like the 1 1/2 strips ,told you there would be a couple of twist to this boat. In one pic you can see the white pine strip on the right.I poped a line then set it as a straight edge to measure from, tomorrow after I lay out my marks to cut the panel I will pop that strip loose and form it to the bottom of my panel. then I want have to measure the second panel.
after cutting the first panel I will lay it on top of the second one and mark it for cutting, then stack them and finish the edges with a belt sander.
I used stech wrap to lay on top of the table and under the stripps it worked well.

Using 1 1/2"strips sure cuts back on time, tried using the stretch/saran wrap before it did ok but occasionaly would get caught between strips without any detrimental results exept my wounded ego, painters drop cloth (.03mm ) worked better for me, next boat will be strip panel, slowly building my WRC stocks, have to finish house project before next one, funny how life gets in the way at times.

I measured out the lines on the side panel

Image
Having the bottom straight edge sure helps

Drove the nails in for my lines
Image

Then the ole strip to mark the curve.

Image

When I finished marking out the panel I moved the bottom marking strip up and fitted it to the contours of the panel I had built.

Image

Then pulled the first panel and built the second one with out having to measure again.

Image

aftyer these dry I will cut the first panel then just lay it on top of this one to mark it.

I cut out the side panels today ,clamped them together and sanded them to shape. I wet one panel down that was flat sanded with cold water, I was told to use hot water anyone try that?

Two things here regarding wetting down with water. Well...three actually. Why are you doing it for one thing? If it's to raise the hairs so you can sand smoother, then it's not necessary. If it's to clean it--it's not necessary at this stage. If it's to help close staple holes and raise dings then it's fine to wet it down with tap temperature water. Warm water might work even better but--what the hell--we're not building a piano. If you're wetting it down to help it bend better then it's really pretty much a waste of time for a panel that large. Small items can be soaked with water, warmer the better, and help bend, but you probably can't wet such a panel down enough to help with bending--and I don't think it's necessary. Steam bending works, but it's fairly specific and not to be done unless you have to.
So...did one of my answers hit your question?

I'm liking it too. I don't know if I'll be able to catch you paddling that little rocket....

I'm going to try that method one of these days. Marine plywood sure is expensive...

I will have about 50.00 dollars in wood in this boat. And I like it better.
This afternoon a little storm came up and blew one of the 16 ft panels about 20 ft ,no damage,if it had been ply it would have broken.

I am building mine out of 1" strips and I was getting all bent out of shape thinking I missed something for the bow and stern and my stem might not fit. I know beginners are a pain! Thanks, ET

I am building a big guy 3 panel fishing boat out of 1 inch cedar strips. The boat will be a 16 footer x 31.5 inches at the sheer with a bottom width of 26 inches. The sides will be 10 inches with a 75 degree flare. It will have approximately 4 foot stripped decks with an 8 foot open cockpit. I am building a 7 inch seat platform to which I will attach a folding padded boat seat. I am trying to copy Gerald’s Brazos River boats without a true plan. It may not be fast but should be stable for fishing and have enough capacity to carry me and my gear on a weekend trip or to go catfish jugging. Light keeper’s Kid and I just cut the 12 and 8 foot cedar into strips and I am going to start putting them together this weekend. This is the only pictures so far. Image

Finally got threw sanding
cut my forms and started stitching her up

Image
Those straight edges on the strips sure go together good.

Image

she is long and lean ,I think she is going to be a keeper.

Image
I will finish stiching her tomorrow and start running some fillets.
