Wooden Flats skiff

Post by 4x4kayak2112 »

What do yall think if this design? its a flat bottom with a pointed beam, my neighbor has a real flats skiff like this one and he likes his.

Specs:
14 ft long, 5 1/2 ft beam, 4 ft bottom, side height 22 inches, transom height 20 inches.

its pretty much my own design, i just need to find out what the width of the ribs..... im guessing the 1st would be 24'' and 2nd 36'', is this right???

I bet it will ride pretty good......

has any one seen the uncle johns bayou skiff, well this is where i got this idea, and the drawing, but that skiff is alot different than mine....i just hope mine will be nice.

:? Just an opinion, but we built some floundering skiffs back in the day, and the design called for the first set of ribs to be about 16 inches forward of the transom because of the load and the torque--then 24" centers there after. Made a little heavier boat, but, we never had a transom failure or a bottom separation. Of, course nobody went over 20 HP either.

I like the lumber yard skiff. But I didn't say that on a kayak site.

This is the "Boat Builder" forum. We go for almost any kind of boat. A flats skiff is certainly a worth project...

How would one of these skiffs perform on a lake, say Conroe for example?

I'm thinking that I might build that one next year as a strip build with spaced strips in decking area, real Old School if I can find a running or fix able 60's or 70's motor. With remote steering as a C/C  Thats why I have that link saved and I know it's not a kayak

Gator Boats has a boat that fits those specs and is rated for a 20 HP motor. I think it is the Carolina Skiff. Looks like a very strong boat and could be easily modified to make it bigger. Construction is plywood on frame built on a strong back. It does require lap joints that require a table saw, router or a good steady hand with a hand saw.
