Pic glasses into boat

Post by 4x4kayak2112 »

Is there a way to take some kind of pic and glass it onto the boat.

i want to do my boat with a pin-up girl (fighter jet style) some where on the boat, and i want it to last.

If was to paint it can i first paint the boat and then glass it?

Yes...there are a variety of materials you can use to do pictures embedded in the epoxy. Rice paper is just one of them. Many others similar to rice paper also work. I use a paper designed for this and is what most surf boards have their designs or pictures put on with. You can print the pictures out with an ink jet printer. The design (picture) should go on after the fiberglass and during the fill coats. This is mostly so it can be removed if ever necessary. Under the fiberglass it's there to stay...

I am with Gerald. I would not put anything UNDER the fiberglass. Put it on between fill coats.

Do a test to make sure your paint does not soften and run when the epoxy gets to it. Markings from a sharpie run...

All the graphics I've ever done were on rice paper applied under the glass, have never had the first hint of a problem. If I were to do it again tomorrow? Probably go above the glass as these guys are saying, can see no reason why not. But I think it's safe to say it works either way. The real "trick" is to perform a test sample first to make sure all your ingredients are gonna get along. It's cheap enough, easy enough, and quick enough to do. From Gerald's texaspaddler.com photo galleries, my first two boats -- hand-drawn with India ink on rice paper:
