Re: uncle jons pirogue
It should have good initial stability, good secondary stability, should have loads of cargo capacity. Using the formula of 1.34 times the square root of the waterline length (in knots but I'll say mph) it should have a potential speed of 5.19 miles per hour. Using my formula of 1 times the square root of the waterline length your cruising speed will be 3.87 mph. Realistically speaking you'll generally paddle in the 3 mph range. You'll fish in the .25 to 1.25 mph range. The speed will compare to any of the other good quality sots, but not of the good quality sitins--usually. Stability should also compare with most sots except those designed for stability rather than motivation. 3 panel boats, pirogues, are the most boat for the money you can build or buy....unless you're buying a pig of a design. The Uncle John's boat is not a pig of a design. Dated type of construction but certainly not a bad boat at all.
One of the best fishing boats I ever built was "Old Blue"...a big 3 panel boat.

I bought the plans for an Uncle John pirogue and then used the stitch and glue method to assemble it. It is 14.5 ft long and 28 inches at the beam. It paddles like a dream in the small rivers and creeks and does well on the lake as long as it is not to choppy. You will NOT be disappointed with this boat!

I am in the final stages of building the 2nd one I started at the first of the year. I use my first one quite frequently here in the tidal creeks around Savannah, Ga. I am very impressed with the comfort and stability of my boat. I followed the UJ directions except I put in a 4th rib to make it alittle wider than the 3 rib. This is what my first one looks like.

Yeah! I know that, now, but I've got CRS and it went out the backdoor on me! You'll get to that point sooner or later!4x4kayak2112 wrote:that pic is also on uncle jons websitebarditch wrote: there you are! I been hunting around for that photo! Sweet ride!
