what is checking
what is checking, is it just on the surface or thru the wood?

It is the surface cracking of plywood. This happens because of the way they peel a log to make the plywood. fir is the biggest culprit. Flat sliced plywood usually doesn't check.

Yes..it can--to a more or lesser degree. Any time you have a layer of the plywood broken or damaged in any way it will decrease it's strength.
Perhaps I should have said it's the cracking of the surface layer of the plywood.
