WORK BENCH (UP DATE)

Hopefully my new shop will be completed next week and I'm setting it up for my boats and fishing stuff. I'm just not happy with the table I set up to build my boats on. I want something that I can roll from side to side (or turn), about 30 inches wide (max) and about 16 feet long (?).

I'v seen some glimpses of some set ups on this forum that were really interesting.

Any ideas

I got to get started on my baby bubba's boat quickly so he can go fish with Pogo

Think if I was going to do it I'd build it in 4 4' sections, each with casters. Then get some snap latches to join them together when boat building or 4 separate work benches/tables when not. Plus if you ever decided to build a short boat just leave one of the section off, saves walking around it all the time

I agree with TXZeke...but I'd add a power strip to each one so that you can utilize your power tools (sanders, drills, routers, wood heaters for bending, etc.) without dragging the infamous orange umbilical cord around with you.

Not boat building related, but the addition of the power strips, with an appropriate work surface would make you a home hero the next time you throw a party or family reunion and have to have a big serving unit w/power available--where you plug in all those roasters! (Experience is a ruthless instructor!)

Ok...here's a picture of a temporary S&G table I use to have. It is screwed to the strip strong back.

This table supports big sheets and boats and is open so I can cut the plywood. I can also make it a large table simply by putting a sheet of plywood on it.

I do like that one, Gerald!

After looking at the pictures for a while, I'm also impressed with the fine light that beams through the windows and reflects up through the working surface, as if celestially inspired...we ain't got no celestial inspiration down here, Gerald...that's no fair!

Yeah, me too! That table evolved over many years of hit, miss, and chance. I kept making temporary S&G tables until one day I realized that was IT! Very simple yet does everything I need for an S&G table. 3' X 16'

Looks fine to me. I'm really liking Zeke's suggestion of wheels and sections. Maybe two 8' sections. Got my mind working now. I've got some wheels somewhere--out in the shed I think. I need a bigger shop!

we all need a bigger shop. That's the only thing keeping me from acquiring more junk, I mean fine merchandise than I already have....hehehe

Well, it's a done deal. Went with this design. 2 sections 8 feet each X 30 inches wide.

They stack when not in use.

Casters lock and work great

Long view and showing how I cover with a couple of loose panels for layouts.

A note to the somewhat more casual crowd -- read: those who don't have a real shop: I use a 10-foot aluminum extension ladder, two sawhorses, and an adjustable roller stand or two to form the basis for a S&G boat building table. I top off the ladder "frame", which may easily be adjusted to the length I need, with whatever plywood scraps I happen to have laying around for a work surface. If I don't have any plywood scraps laying around, a quick trip to the lumberyard for some cheap stuff soon expunges the deficit from the books, and always ends up coming in handy for other stuff. The table sets up and knocks down quickly, and pretty much ceases to exist when disassembled so storage is never an issue. Heck, it works so well I've never seen any need to improve upon it.
