BTB - Friday - High Waves
I woke up this am and when it got daylight the weather was absolutely great.....no wind and cool. I decided to go fishing and left the house about 9:00 am for High Island. When I came off the causeway, I noticed the bait camp flags seemed to be out of the NE When I got to Bolivar the winds still seemed to be out of the NE. Got to High Island, between the piers, and there was a strong SE wind (18 mph) but the surf was ok, but out past the surf, as far as one could see was white caps and rolling waves.
So I drove back to Bolivar Flats and launched there with Wolfman and his brother-in-law. The surf was paddleable but there were large swells and crashing surf for about 3-400 yards out. I never paddled up and over so many small mountains in my life. These were the kind of waves that when a long yak (14 ft or more) go over it bangs on the bottom and everything in tank well bounces about 3 inches in the air.
We paddled out to the sunken ship and used it for protection as we anchored in the leeward side.
Soon Emmed1 joined us and we sat there and sat there and sat there.
Emmed1 fishing:
Finally Wolfman get a run but no hookup. I get a couple of runs but no hookup......I am thinking hardheads.......then Wolfman gets a run and hooks up! Here he is hooked up!
He caught a nice bull red and we felt good( he took pics and I am sure will post up).
Then we sat and sat and all at once the birds started feeding and three of us get good runs but no fish.
Finally I get a good run and it is "fish on"!!!
I caught this bull red!
He even had a pretty tail markings!
I had another couple of hookup and one I even got to the yak and he was a monster. Must have been 56", but when I got him close he raised his head and said "Your not BBBBBrooke" and spit the mullet.....it hit my forehead and mulled guts ran down my nose. This huge bull red, then did a tail walk for 5 yards and swam off laughing!!!
At 4:00 we packed up and paddled in.......the surf was rough (even though it had settled some) and I think three out of four of us flipped in the surf.

Mythman...do you realize how lucky you are to just be able to 'decide' to go to High Island, to just 'drive' over there?
You are blessed, Sir.
Is the sunken ship that one off Galveston, the concrete freighter, the one west of the ferry boat route?
If so, where do you launch to paddle out to it?
Congratulations on a good day on the water!
Great report, as always.

shoot missed Mythman's post, but here are some more pics and post of the trip
I've spent the last week in the Hospital in UT with my Father, recently diagnosed with Leukemia and spent a rough week there. Flew back into a WARM Houston and needed a break. What better time to spend relaxing then BTB fishing.
Met together with my Bro in Law, Keith, and Mythman to hit the salt.
Weather cams looked absolutely beautiful Friday Morning…SO Packed up and out we went.
About the Galveston causeway the wind picked up and made me a little nervous. About the time we were wheels to sand the wind must have been 15 – 20 knots. Surf was 2-3 but not too bad.
We met up at Rettilon road and fished the protected side of the wreck.. The waves were pretty choppy, but we had a small section of calmer water. Mythman head out first and Keith and I quickly followed. We anchored up and got some good talking going on. Emmed1 joined us shortly, good to meet him for the first time!

Keith my bro-in-law was on his first BTB trip and the waves made for a tough day. He did good under some difficult waves. Here’s a pic of him baiting up! <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb55 ... 0_0566.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
Bite was slow today, had a few runs and then dropped. Needed to let the fish run with it a bit more, but soon pulled one in the boat.

This is the same fish, but a hold the fish up with one hand and take the picture with the other. This technique may one day qualify as an Olympic event….it was a bit tricky!

Mythman then pulled in a red and had some runs as well. IT was a little rough for a trip, but we squeaked out a few fish, so a good day.
Pics don’t really do it justice..but here’s one of the wave action and shore:
