BTB Anchor Rigging
Sharing my method of rigging my anchors for BTB fishing:
This is a pic of the whole anchor system, which includes a 2.5 lb bruce claw anchor, 50 feet of rope, two small floats, an anchor buoy, bungee shock cord and carabiners to attach all.
I rig my bruce claw with a small zip tie that can be broken to allow me to pull the anchor up, if it should become lodged on something.
I, also, prefer a knot close to the anchor so when I am pulling it in I know when I am about to get to the anchor and I can avoid banging my boat.
I prefer a small float before the large anchor buoy and after it where I connect up( I have had the anchor buoy come loose from the anchor and having the small float saved me from losing an anchor and rope).........the bungee cord is to act as a shock chord when big waves hit the kayak. The carabiners are convenient for quick releases and hookups.
Any of these items can be used as a anchor float......you just need something that you can spot in big waves, after being towed.
In strong currents (like the Houston Ship Channel) or a total sand bottom in deep waters I switch anchors and us the Danforth style anchor.

I would like one of those nice floats but they are over $30 at Bass Pro. I've been using a detergent bottle but this weekend, I plan to buy one of these: (not the kid)

My daughter got a catalog flyer in the mail today that has them for $9.99. Lots of bright colors too.

Dude, I have an 8 year old daughter. Sponge Bob is the one thing I absolutely can't tolerate Maybe I could spray paint over that part.
All the other mess like Hanna Montanna, nickelodeon and just about anything is fine but when I come home to that little sponge you-know-what blaring on the TV I just lose it. No way can I fish with one

Looked at the 9" floats for $19 at Bass Pro today and ended up buying this for $9.99. A vinyl float that inflates up to 40" - not bad. Found them at Toys-R-Us in Katy. I can live with the graphic. Maybe I can use some spidey sense to catch fish?

Every weekend I can't fish I find ways to spend money towards the next weekend that I can fish. So whether it's gas or gadgets, this sport is breaking me!
But I did rationalize that I saved $10 so I took that 'found' money and got a 30 pack of high life

When you hook up on a large fish and unhook your anchot from the boat for the "Sleigh Ride" this help you find you anchor when you paddle back. If you stay anchored up a large fish might spool you so unhook and enjoy the ride. Lerger size helps spot it and small object could be hard to see in 1 -2 feet swells.playsitright wrote:noob question here so the float it just for when you catch a fish and have to brake away so you dont get tanggled right? is that the only reason or are there more?
And yes to your question also the fish have a habit of finding your anchor rope and trying to use it ti there advantage.

Here are a few pics of my anchor setup. The claw anchor is tied at the back like Myth Man's with a cable tie holding it to the front of the anchor. I have 50' of 3/16" braided line attached to the anchor with a brass snap on the top end.
I like to wrap the anchor line around the handle of my float a couple of times then catch the line in the brass snap. I then attach one end of my double caribeener bungee from the automotive department of Wal Mart to the bottom of the brass snap where the anchor rope is tied and the other end of the bungee attaches to the ring in my anchor trolley. This transfers any strain from the bungee to the anchor rope without pulling on the handle of my float. It also allows me to release the caribeener end of the bungee from my anchor trolley ring quickly while knowing its other end is securely attached to my float.
I was lucky when I got my float from Toys R Us on I10W at Bunker Hill and got a generic moon bounce ball without a licensed character graphic on it. Also it inflates with mouth pressure like an air mattress with a plug to keep the air in. I don't need a pump and needle to inflate it so I can choose to inflate it on the beach before I paddle out or where I stop when I anchor up.
It also deflates into a compact wad for storage and transpotration.
This picture shows my anchor & rope and the additional 50' rope coiled and wrapped with velcro straps to avoid tangles in my gear box.
There are no absolutes in setting up an anchor system. This is just how I have mine rigged and am fairly happy with it.

I've been out with that double caribiner bungee several times with no problems (yet). I even used it when a buddy forgot his anchor and we tied off from my bow to his stern with another line so both of our yaks were pulling on it. It was rather uncomfortable but the bungee held just fine. Thanks for the heads up. I may start carrying another hook up out with me just in case.

Thanks guys. I was just sitting in the garage trying to rig up my anchor system. Just got my yak and while I had an idea these posts really helped seal the deal. I was close but lacking a couple of things. This post was a great help.

Re: BTB Anchor Rigging
Easy float...large diameter pool float cut into 2 12-14" sections zip tied together. Run line through both. I also use it to wrap my anchor line around it. $3.99 works like a charm and stores easy in the tank well.
Re: BTB Anchor Rigging
FYI: when going BTB remember to BRING extra anchor line...
50ft is not long enough for a mini-bruce at the Gas rig off of SurfSide...

I like how your set up is mike. Just picked up my anchor bouy yesterday at west marine. One thing I noticed that this are made of some rugged material. I usually throw a.double anchor set up in series. When the current is ripping pretty hard. one is at 100 ft. and then other is at 50 ft. this set up works so good that I have a hard time trying to break it,loose from the soft sand.

Re: BTB Anchor Rigging
I thought I would pull this thread up again; I am no BTB pro but this is a good anchor system Mike put together. I have it in my "Favorites," so I can find it easily, along with multiple other TKF Salt- and Freshwater posts.
I needed to check my gear again today before a trip, and this came to mind.
