Crimps hurt for sure. The only way I know to cover them up is with shrink tubing. That's too much work for me! Gloves help, preferably leather ones. The work gloves from any Home Improvement Retailer work great.

Wolfman posted a leader post and they had a great idea
to use a lighter to "ball" the end before crimping it.
Makes sense bigfost. I will be making up a few new ones this week.

Man those babies are nice. It gets me geeked up for tying a few of my one. I also agree about the sticky, this is great information that need to be readily available.

A very different rig than most of us use. I can't figure out what the four beads on the hooks are for?? Sorta of looks like a troutline.

Lets us know if it works.

Daniel that rig looks interesting! IT should work for the drum, with the multiple hooks.

Once area of condern is the pressure the fish puts on the line will rub up agains the crimp. Look at where the hooks meet up with your main leader. The crimp is to anchor the hooks coming off the main line, but when a fish takes the bait the pressure from the hooks leader will be cutting into the crimp on the main.

Shoudl work for a few drum, but after a while i woudl be concerned about the wire breaking. Plys if a big shark ever takes it....may be in for a heartbreak!

For the shark rig has anyone done a bigger loop so a snap with a length of rope can be attached? That ought to take away some of the problems of slicing a hand open also.

I am not quite understanding what you mean. You mean a bigger loop where the leader attached to the line or the mono.

Generally only inexperienced and foolish people get their hands sliced open by a shark. All you got to do is carry a good pair of wire cutters and cut the SS when the shark is done.......pretty simple. It's those people who try to retrieve their hooks that run into trouble.

Russ,

There is an example of exactly what you are talking about in Sandifers piece in the April Gulf Coast. LOOKN4REDS

I forget where the attach point was but I'm sure it was on the wire side of the leader. Read it in one of Sandifer's articles about how it made it easier to pull sharks onto the beach or next to a boat to unhook them and turn them loose. I'll look tonite and find the article and post it up, just wondering if any kayakers did this too

Daniel,

Double hook rigs increase the chances of you getting hooked, particular when you have a fish on in your kayak with the other hook exposed. I've tried double hook rigs for Drum with no change in fishing success, just more problems dealing with 2 hooks.

Only thing I do different is on my shark leaders At the end of the Mono I attach a HUGE snap swivel, then attach my wire leaders with hook to the snap swivel. This makes the change of hook really easy. Cut the wire to release the shark, open the snap swivel take off the wire leader with no hook swap with new wire leader and hook.

Worked last year pretty good for me. No lost fish due to snap swivel failure.

As far as slicing my hands open, the crimps were really cutting my hands pretty bad. I'd leader the fish and it would still be green and take off, the leader crimp would tend to slice through my hands. Started wearing gloves to protect them.

OK found the article it was in his column for april's Gulf coast connections. 3/32 stainless cable and then just make the loops to the swivels bigger and use single strand wire to attach the hook to the last swivel.

the biggest hook ive ever found is a 14/0 hook and that thing is rediculous
where can you get a 16/0 hook and can i use a 12/0 instead for the shark leaders
for surf fishing and bayfishing

Mustad 39948A
I use this Mustad A 12/0 for Drum and Sharks (it's the size of a regular 15/0 but with a larger gap and a smaller diameter shank), more difficult to find.

Simple fix for this is to backbraid your hook/swivel connections and I like to top it off with a little liquid elctrical tape. Then end result is a smooth leader with nothing for your hands to snag on; not to mention the cable will pull apart in the center before the backbraid will break.

I'm tired now and fixing to hit the sack after 16 hours at work but here are a couple pics showing how its done, I will explain later if anyone is interested..

Image

you would slide your hook/swivel over one of these strands..

slap a little liquid electrical tape on it if your at home building them at the loop and it will be smooth and will not come apart. If I'm on the water I don't put the elctrical tape on it at all.. This is done using 49 strand or 7x7 or whatever you feel like calling it on that particular day..
