Learning to Handle Offshore Conditions

Post by Prof. Salt »

A big part of fishing offshore comfortably is learning to work in the sloppy conditions we often find there. The surf is a big part of the challenge, so I have been incorporating waves into my evening workouts. It sure beats other forms of cardio work, and keeps my brain busy as I adjust to the constant changes around me. If you're considering fishing offshore from a kayak, I highly recommend getting out in your local bay and working in the choppy stuff to learn your kayak's handling and to get comfortable in "uncomfortable" conditions. It really pays off when you finally get out on the open water!

Begin simply, by launching into the wind and paddling up then back with the waves. As you gain experience you can begin adding distance and opening up your workout options. Stay safe but don't be afraid to push yourself in an environment that limits the dangers.

It is so cool, Glenn.
Seems like you are qualified for another side job of inspecting the ship hull now…..:)

Haha, that ship sits right in the down-wind pocket of the bay and helps funnel the waves to stand up. It's a spot worth checking out when the wind is up but the open bay isn't offering waves that I'm looking for.

Where do you launch from when paddling around Lexington?

I launch at the Marina (L-head) public launch right on the bay front. It’s protected and allows me to warm up while getting to the open water, and to finish the workout I smaller waves.

I'm finally learning that bracing can come in really handy.

Nice and thanks for the video. I like to launch off the beach in Port Aransas and you're correct, once you learn to the surf, waves and handle rougher conditions and it makes everything easier; practice.
