Tripletail tactics..

Post by prolog22 »

Found this tripletail on the way to MP rig. He let me come real close. Tried to get him with gulp worms, sabiki and small lure no results. Any suggestions how to get them excited?

I've heard shrimp or slowly presented shrimp imitation (e.g. under cork) often works... Never this fish before personally, just propagating a hearsay.

We had, I don’t know, 50 or 100 shots at big tripletail nearshore one morning with a variety of lures and flies and failed to draw any interest from a single one. They didn’t appear to be feeding or interested in food. Exciting and frustrating at the same time.

I thought triple tail were targeted in the bays. Never knew they were offshore so plentiful to see them. Cool.

This is the first time I found this fish but saw at least one report from Prof. Salt when he managed to get it from under the floating tree.
Live shrimp should work but not realistic option offshore.

My experience is that like cobia, tripletails have two modes: “nope” and “eat everything”. I’ve caught them on mirrolures, chrome spoons and dead bait. I’ve also found them turning down every possible offering.

I guess my buddy was in the wrong mood, spent about half an hour around it, it looked beefy and i knew they are one of the best for eating..

Consider it a half hour well spent. When they come aboard it's worth the effort. :D

Enjoyed this time. These rains brought in some new species and opportunities to try different tactics, it is cool.
