Fish ID

Post by prolog22 »

Captured this fish on camera around MP rigs yesterday, anybody knows fish ID? The lure is in the lower left, it should be of a size of large king ..

Congrats! You got a picture of one of those sailfish that were caught out there 2 weeks ago!

You can tell by the nose and tail.

There were 2 of them and a dorsal fin is not there, was thinking that it is a crocodile needle fish but it is not, too much meat.
My camera kept them away, if I had just some sort of fly or small bait fish free lined it would have worked..

Absolutely not sailfish.

Likely houndfish or needlefish. Id bet houndfish as they are a bit thicker and bigger around here. State record is around 38" long or so.

You can't see the dorsal because it's not there. Unless they both got haircuts, not a sail...

Sails are relatively thin fish, but they don't have a round profile. Those are houndfish. I caught a 30"+ at the far MP rigs last year.

It hit a Slim Wave that I pitched toward the rig. I was hoping for Spanish, but found a hound instead. I actually put him on a wire rig and pulled him around for a while ...but nobody was interested.

It looks like around Florida houndfish is annoying for local fishermen and eats just about everything. Meat is very good though.
