Winds are bit high for me. 10-14 all morning climbing to more than 15 after 2 pm. The winds are from the N/NE which will make the surf less choppy to get out but I would like a little less wind. Tide will be going out most of the day as well.
Let us know if you go how you did please!

This looks interesting. I might take some vacation to head out there. I hope the Spanish are here.

I'm watching. The schedule at work is not ideal next week, but I may have the yak loaded "just in case". I haven't paddled in a couple of weeks and that's not good! :D

Been watching and tides show going out both days so wave heights will be small and with winds from north on Sunday the waves will be smaller still. 62 degrees at 0700. wont get to 70 until noon though. All site showing Monday to be good but very windy all day from the SE.
So I am deciding to go out with the wind and be cold or come back in with the wind and be warmer but wind blown.
I spent all day today rigging new king leaders and cleaning my smack lures. I'll text you if I decide to go the day before.

Well, looks like Monday is shot with high winds.
Sunday looks better but waves at shore might be 1.5'-2' with outgoing tide and NE 8 mph winds.
I am still debating to head down and try it out.
If I go and the waves are too high or the winds are not productive I may just go to Packery Channel jetties and throw some 2 oz spoons for some jack, reds, or other big fish. I bought a bunch from Amazon in both gold and silver....
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0095 ... UTF8&psc=1

and imitation crabs for some sheepshead closer to rocks....

Thresher Fishing has been tearing them up at the jetties lately.... https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiv6bJ ... 7eUcLDXXNA

Decided too far to drive for high winds. Low winds in Galveston on Sunday night looks better for me.

hit the rigs south of Bhp rig, got a limit of reds and sheepshead.

I need to get myself used to doing btb again, was tired when I got to the first rig and turtles coming in.

Cool! Limit of snapper is great!
I didn't go because I didn't want to be so cold while fishing. Big636dime said he made it out but no fish. Maybe he will post a report. The surf was basically flat from the picture he sent me. I was kicking myself int he butt for not going after seeing the surf but when he said no kings or smacks I was bummed for him but felt better I didn't go this time.

Kb, I've seen you post that you use a trolling motor on your yak. I was curious if you use it for BTB as well and how well it works getting in and out thru the surf? I've only paddled thru the surf once and got rolled coming back in. It was in poorly designed kayak for that tho (a 10 ft lifetime manta) and was just goofing around close to the beach. But anyway, I'm somewhat interested in trying BTB someday but would either want a pedal yak or a trolling motor. Just getting to old and too many bad joints to paddle that far. May never do it anyway but still have an interest even tho the wife hates the idea. LOL

LOL, I use my TM every chance I can as it frees my hands and legs to concentrate on fishing and paying attention to other things as I am not focused on propulsion all the time. And it eases the pain I get in my back from sitting all day.
I have not used it for BTB yet. I do take it with me however. If the surf is ice cream conditions and I can be assured to get out and come in without turtling. If the condition are right and I know they will stay that way I may take it out sometime.
My TM is not completely water proof if it goes in the water as the head was removed and I use PVC to access the wires and don't want to glue it so I can get to the wires for any reason. I will probably seal it with goop before I do go BTB to makes sure but the battery is the heaviest item and to get a few hours you need at least a 35 amp hour and they weigh 35 lbs.
I use a 105 Amp hour sealed AGM battery and can be on the water for up to 15 hours of on and off use, not full throttle the whole day. This battery weighs 75 lbs! Since the battery is sealed AGM there is no need to replace the acid or worry about getting water in it if it goes in the water.
I tied a float to it in case I do turtle, the float will unwind and rise to the surface so I know where it is and can pull it up with the 550 cord I have attached to it and the float. I lost a battery once to a turtle on an old kayak and I learned my lesson.
BTB is just to risky to take almost $250 worth of trolling motor and battery along with all my rods and tackle.
Besides, BTB you usually only go 2 to 5 miles out and 2-5 miles back in. The first rig at Bob Hall Pier is only 2.1 miles out. You can paddle or peddle there easily and troll around the rig all day and you shouldn't be too tired if you work out and practice before you go well in advance. You should be fit any way because you may need your strength to turn your kayak over in deep water or some other emergency!
I can go BTB for about 6-8 hours and be fine. Make sure to bring an anchor with lots of rope because in case you do get too tired and are alone you can drop anchor to catch your breath and rest before continuing on. You can also tie onto the rigs and jig for snapper and other fish at the rigs! Remember that it is about 30-60 feet deep so make sure you have at least 100 feet of rope for the anchor. I made my own oil rig gaff that Prof Salt uses. He did a video on how to make one. It works like a brush anchor but larger for oil rigs.

...Forgot to add that I ALWAYS take my mirage drive and paddle with me when I take the trolling motor. You never know when one will fail. Electronics always go first and moving parts are second, just like my back...

Thanks for all the info. I don't think I would ever go alone and will need to upgrade my kayak before I do anyway. If I ever decide to give it a try, I'll try to hook up with someone that has BTB experience. I actually have a tm on that lifetime manta kayak but I'm not crazy about the way its set up. I have a huge battery on it and that kayak doesnt have a hatch or a tank well so it has to sit on top of a seat area and makes it really top heavy. Its fine for calm water but I wouldn't want take it in the ocean. Will probably just wait til I get a pedal yak.

If your in no hurry and you pick a day where you go out on an outgoing tide and come back in with an incoming tide and low winds would be an easy day. Lots of new BTB kayakers break their cherry at High Island fishing for bull reds 400-1000 yards off shore. Bob Hall is a great starting place for farther out. Just plan carefully and be flexible. Of course go with others that paddle also and you can go along with them to the 1st rig and back. It's a nice easy early morning stroll to the rig. It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour or a bit longer if you take your time or catch fish along the way trolling to get there. Some don't even make it to the rigs as they find schools on the way or try for smacks and other pelagic fish in the shallower water.
Start working that paddle and get ready. The weather gets good only once in a while when you got time and you have to be watching and talk to others to plan ahead. I'll go with you if you need a first partner. Watch some videos on BTB, get your gear ready and be flexible. I try to be this time of year with the weather and the great spring/summer prospects of BTB action.

We ending up going Sunday and lunched from the Mayan princess. Surf was looking good for the morning but no blue water no birds. We hit the rigs anyway, I had two big runs but couldn't land or see color. Did hear some guys did a lot better further down south. no kings just Spanish and jacks.
