Battling a Giant

Post by Prof. Salt »

I get excited when fish come aboard the kayak, but this fish was in a whole different class than anything I've ever hooked. I have never been nervous about gaffing a king because of it's size until now. This one was big enough that it gave me the same butterflies I get with a big cobia. Lots could go wrong but I was ready to give it my best effort. I did just that ...but so did this giant magical fish. It bit cleanly through 55 lb titanium after a 25 minute fight, most of which took place directly under the kayak. Ouch, this one still hurts!

I am getting suspicious about these wire leaders -- one of the kings I caught off SPI jetty few weeks ago almost got away when wire leader suddenly snapped right when I was grabbing him by the gills...

Mono doesn't do very well at all. I'm always experimenting but haven't found a better option yet.

Just finished watching the battle before seeing your post. I was hoping you were going to tail land her and not gaff but it ended well with a lesson learned

Wonderful fish Glenn! Sorry it broke off. :(

Would you have kept it if you would have landed it? A question more rhetorical in nature so just something to ponder.

My condolences, but still wonderful to have that experience. When I say this, I say it with the utmost respect to Jesus. You could name that fish Jesus, King of Kings.

Was that the Knot 2 Kinky leader? As good as they sound, I've read that they have a tendency to break off. Even the wires in the 15# range. I wanted to get some and try it, but if they're prone to breakoffs like that, I think i'll save my money.

It didn't fail at the knot, the fish bit through after 25 minutes of chewing. K2K is particular in how it needs to be tied, but once you master the skill it's a very useful material. Unfortunately I now know that a giant king has the ability to chew through.

I will adjust accordingly and seek a rematch. :D

You need a longer gaff.

Another fish lives to be caught by Prof. Salt another time! I saw your vid on YouTube before I saw your post here and commented there. I noted you sounded like a little girl that dropped her ice cream when the king chewed through. I had to laugh. So sorry for your loss right at the yak! Another great video! Thanks for sharing.

i have them break my 80 lb stainless steel at the jetty. When i won the tournament on 2015, i was using 120 lb piano wire just to make sure that it didn't break.

Tinh, I'm moving that direction. For now I'm leaving the leading wire light, but the connection between hooks is getting beefed up. Now I need to fish the new rigs and see how they fool the fish.
