12/0 Mustad hook for gaff hook

Post by Longliner »

Went to BP for some 12/0 J hooks to make a gaff. The Mustads they had went up to 11/0 only. I couldn't believe the price $18 for two hooks. Screw that! I bought 4- 12/0 mustad J hooks for $13 on Amazon and got them 2 days later. I'm using Prof. Salts carbon fiber golf club idea on these gaffs. But using j hooks. The golf club was $2.98 at GW.

This litterly only took 5mins to do. Cut the head off the club with my band saw and cut the hook with my bolt cutters

Hmm. I didn't think it would be large enough, but that looks pretty durn close. Great cheap and high-quality gaff!

Would you need to modify the barb? It would help keep the fish on but it also might be a little more challenging to unhook when you're done. Thoughts?

I flatened the Barb and filed it down some but not 100% it will probably still act like a Barb somewhat

How is it held in the club shaft?

Go gaff something big and post pics. I have a club shaft with a "V" on the end for pinning down rattlesnakes.
Yeah, yeah, I know what y'all are thinking...

I'm sure it would be ok, you don't want to big of a hook gap for kings this one has 1 7/8". I put tuna cord in front of the pool noodle for grip with shrink tube on one end to hold it and 2 part epoxy on the other just because that's what I had on hand at the time.
