Kingfish Weight Estimations

Post by bdc69 »

I'm trying to guess the weight of the 52" kingfish I caught yesterday. So how much would a kingfish weigh if it were...

25"
30"
35"
40"
45"
50"
55"
60"

and also...are official measurements to the fork of the tail or the tip?

I've wondered this too. Length x girth squared divided by 1000 works for a lot of fish but kings are thinner than other types.

kings are all very different, you can have a 50 inch king go 35 pounds or 20 pounds it just depends on the fish if you have a picture i think we can give you a close estimate on its weight.
keep in mind kings probably fluctuate weight during individual days as well..with an empty stomach they will be lighter..full of 2-3 pound ladyfish who knows how much weight they can put on during the day..
i believe the state record was 58inches..i have landed a few kings longer than that just lighter..i have seen a kingfish in texas a complete 6+ feet and 80 pounds.
i filleted a 100 pound wahoo years ago who had a 22 pound kingfish in its stomach, the texas state record king was probably stuffed full of baby kings/smacks lol...

My 54 incher from earlier this summer was over 36lbs, but she was exceptionally thick. The state record doesn't look like a normal kingfish because it also had a very heavy girth. They can vary quite a bit when they get over 50 inches, but for those under 50 inches there should be a formula that is relatively accurate. You won't catch many skinny OR fat 40 inchers. If Kevin (CastnBlast) has the time to do it, maybe he could publish the length, weight results from the tourney. That would go a long ways towards establishing a scale for you.

I agree with the interest in having an average weight/length chart. That would be useful.

If someone can measure the next few they catch we can check the formula too.

Just eyeing things: Say a 43" has a 23" girth (measured at fattest area of body). 43x(23)sq/1000. 43 x 529=22747 divided by 1000 is 22.75 lbs estimate.

The one king i managed to weigh in at bwkc, went 41and some change to tip of tail weighed 11pounds and some change. It seemed a little on the skinny side to me. When i filleted it, i got curious and cut open stomach. Besides a hand full of mush the only thing else in it was my ribbon fish.

you make a neat point, it would have been cool to see what was the stomach contents of our bwkc catches..you can usually get some sort of pattern for what they were feeding on that day..

I'm 6'6". I don't think I have the king tilted to where it was facing the camera. This king seemed very weighty. No girth measurement unfortunately.

The length vs. mass curve in fish follows an exponential trend. I would like to make something akin to this which is length vs. mass in red drum;

So, the LxG(2)/1000 comes from the west coast and is very accurate on steelhead. So similar shape like Bone fish, etc. it's probably pretty accurate. It might work on kings too since they're not super chunky.

For salmon, the same formula except you divide by 800 due to a stockier build on the average salmon. I'd say red fish are much closer to a salmon type body, so that may work well for them.

A couple of months back someone posted a link where you enter the length and type of fish and it would give you an estimate of weight. I cant find the site right now but looked cool.

Kings do vary a lot in weight. Some are more stout and some are leaner. I've weighed a few in lol! First to answer your question - a 50" or so king is generally in the mid to upper 20's in weight your fish is prob in the 27-30lb range. A 55-60" are in the upper 30's to low 40's but can vary a lot at that size. They can be up to 50. The 63"
I caught a couple summers ago weighed in at 47lb 9oz.

Here's some observations.
30" -36" 6-10lbs
36-40" 10-15lbs
40-45" 15-20lbs
45-50" 20-30lbs
After 50" all over the place.

i agree with cast n blast, though i havnt seen many 50 inch kings who were over 30 pounds, i would say the average for a 50 inch king is closer to 24-25 pounds..my 48 inch king from the tourney was 22 pounds and it was fat...

Oz's 30 lb king was like 54" if memory serves me correct. Most 50"
Kings are in that 25-28lb. However a few
Years ago the winning or close to winning CCA King was a 55-56" fatty that went 56lbs. The biggest variable in fish over 50" is their girth. These are really old fish. Which is why you really shouldn't eat them. I call them Mercury Missiles...

That king was a pig. It was a lot thicker than the other 54 inchers I have landed.

no way that graph is accurate..a 54 inch king being an average over 40 pounds...no way...and an average 49 inch king being over 30 pounds...like i said my 48 incher was 22 pounds, according to the chart 44 inch kings are over 20 pounds my 44 inch king on tourney day was 15 pounds..kings are pretty light fish..it takes allot of king to get over that 20 pound range..i stand by the average for a 50 inch king is about 25 pounds.

Image
one of my heaviest kings..solid 55 pounds

Maybe they are fatter on average in the Atlantic. Here is a recent one from an NC pier:

I know it's old - but an interesting thread nonetheless.

I thought I would "weigh in" with my PB we caught a few weeks back:

55 inches - 42lbs 6oz
