Depends on where in Houston u start & what time u take the ferry.

I live NW Houston & always take I-10,124 to Rollover.

Use to live Clear Lake & always took the ferry.

The ferry at 6:30 should still be ok,the tourists haven't woke up yet . If you do get stuck in a line that backs out to the street make sure you don't stop in the intersections. If you don't leave the intersection clear the police WILL give You a ticket.

In the morning the ferry is easily the better route for you. Coming back will be the more difficult question. I'm not sure how bad the ferry traffic is this time of year though.

Like you, I live near the S.E corner of Belt Way 8. I've traveled both ways and prefer the Belt Way to I10 at Winnie south to High Island. The ferry wait and I45 traffic were the biggest issues, where as the I10 drive is a lot more relaxed and the speed is steady.

Having had a weekend place down there for 19 years, I avoided the ferry like the plague, unless I had bidness in Galveston or the gulf freeway. 1 wrinkle I always did was take I10 east, exit at highway 61 (either the 810 or the 812 mile marker, cant remember) and either stop at the mcdonalds for breakfast, or dj's exxon next door for a barbq sandwich or boudain. Run hwy 61 till you come to a fork in the road. Bear left, to the right goes to Smith Point..keep going till you pass the Anahuac Wildlife Refuge..you will eventually run into hwy 124 right above High Island. A right on 124 straight to the beach. The beauty about going this way is, depending on what time of the day you drive it, you might not see another car for 30 miles...enjoy all the farms and rice fields, and tho I don't condone speeding, you can sure make good time going this way.
