I use an older Magellan Meridian.

I seldom use one...............only when I go offshore over 1.75 miles and want to be sure to be able to know which vehicle on the beach is mine, when coming back.

It's hard to beat any of the etrex gps'. They are really tough, reliable, and affordable. I use one daily at work...

I use an etrex vista hcx gps. Works great for finding the truck and marking fishing spots. Great for river trips too. It is supposed to be waterproof but haven't completely submerged it yet so I can't say how waterproof it really is.

Is there a fish finder with temperature and GPS together? If so is it better to have them together or separate and which is a decent brand for 150 price range?

Just picked up one of these. Seems like it will do the job. http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-2-6-Inch-N ... marine+gps

I use the Navionics Marine & Lakes app on my smartphone. Saves me a ton of mess, work, space, etc. messing with sonar most of the time. If I want sonar on board, I use a Humminbird Pirahnamax 160P. But this is almost exclusively for inland lakes I haven't fished much or at all.

I use a Backtrack that I paid $30 for at Academy. My only need for GPS is to get back to my truck. Anything else is overkill IMO given the fact that there is little structure other than what is visible such as rigs. The powerboat is a different story.

I use the Timex Ironman Triathlon GPS and I have it programmed for kayaking. You can set distance, speed, heart rate, and what ever you want to set. Select navagate and it will display your location, waypoints, compass and so on. Plus its water resistant 50 meters. Check it out. :D

Jason,

I fish a lot of unfamiliar water due to the work I do, whether it's the charity, marketing work, or writing. So the GPS interactive nav charts + sat maps of the Navionics smartphone apps (w/tide charts and all sorts of bells and whistles) really come in pretty handy for me a lot of the time. If I were fishing close to home most of the time, I would barely ever refer to it from a kayak though. You make a good point. You can find out where some submerged wrecks and reefs, holes, etc. are precisely located with nav charts and gps. But once you've dialed them in by actually paddling to them and fishing them a time or two you really don't need the stuff anymore (except in the fog or something crazy like that).

i have GPS/TEMP/DOWN IMAGE/2D on my humminbird 597ci HD/DI combo. I brought it out BTB one time and somehow knocked the ducer loose and have been too lazy to re mount it. havent seen the need for it while out BTB other than to figure out how deep im sitting. dont really need the GPS out there unless i get blown way off shore and need the CG on the radio...?

Instead of relying on electronics for depth, I just use my anchor rope which has a small zip tie every three feet. I never have to charge its batteries!

In the old days, sailors used to tie a knot in a rope every half fathom (3 ft) with a weight on the end and use it for a sounding line. This is where Samuel Clemens took the pen name Mark Twain from. Twain is an old English word for half or two. The 1st mate or captain would call out, "Mark Twain," and the linesman would reply, "Mark Twain, eye." Then the line was lowered until it hit bottom. Then it was pulled up as the knots were counted. Then the sailor counting the knots would call back, "Mark Twain 6 fathoms, sir." Fascinated with the river boats on his home waters, the Mississippi River, Clemens took the pen name Mark Twain when he began writing.

Funny you say that Ken. I started doing that after I saw it in the movie Master and Commander.
