Cobra FND fishfinder mount - Norcross Hawkeye FF3355P

Post by It's a keeper »

After reading the “Norcross Hawkeye FF3355P Fish Finder - $50 at Amazon.com” topic, http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/foru ... hp?t=69498, and looking at the pictures Mythman and Wolfman57 posted, I built a portable fish finder mount for my Cobra FND XF kayak. I needed a longer extension arm for the placement and angle of the FND forward rod holders. Materials used were: 1 inch 450 psi PVC pipe, one PVC end cap, two PVC 90 degree elbow joints, PVC primer and glue, black paint, duct tape, Thompsons WaterSeal, and 75 lb cable ties. Here are the pictures:

I had to sand off the black paint from the end cap to make the pipe slide easier into the rod holder. The end cap provides a good fit at the rod holder base and duct tape wrapped to the desired thickness provides a snug fit at the top of the rod holder. A drill was used to punch a hole through the elbow joint just big enough for the broom stick (bought at Home Depot) to slide through. The wing nut was tightened on the transducer after the desired tilt angle was achieved. I plan on drilling another hole through the broomstick to raise the transducer height for a shallower depth setting (secure with strong twisty). This will allow two depths for water conditions and less resistance for long paddles. I am pleased with this setup - it's strong, light-weight, compact, and works just fine.

Very good idea and excellent pics to explain. I like the sturdiness of it as the thin plastic I use has been replaced several times due to damage through use.

Yesterday a shark got my line tangled up in the FF rod and the rod is going to have to be replaced, again.

BTW, did you know Wolfman has mounted his FF3355P thru the hull on his Cobra? So we know Cobra plastic will accept it and work. I tried my X and it didn't work but I am going to try again. I have found I don't use it anywhere else, so I might as well permanently mount it and get it out of the way.

If that doesn't work then I will use my same system but more durable rod.

Dude!! That is a nice set up. I have the same FF and will be setting mine up in a few weeks. My Mojo has a sliding console that I am planning on attaching the PVC arm to, instead of a forward rod holder (which I don't have).
I will post pics then.

This was real good news to hear about the Cobra plastic. I keep my fish bag and a spare set of paddles (sometimes) underneath my rectangular hatch, so I would be a little leary of myself banging up the wires if my transducer mount was installed below. I guess the wires could be routed to the side to keep out of harms way.

I exerimented with the plastic first to make sure and i get a signal through it. It's been on a few trips and worked great. I strap the extra cord to the scuppers and take the wire up through a hatch. Works great so far.

Used Silicone to stick it to the bottom of the yak. Just made sure there were no air bubbles to screw up the signal. worked great!
